Philosophical Investigation of the influential concept of THE PATHOGEN
The following is a review of what is screwed up in this popular narrative of the PATHOGEN named COVID 19, which includes the point that the concept of a PATHOGEN is a DOUBLE ERROR based abstraction, meaning that “PATHOGENS” do not exist in reality, but are intellectual concepts based on two mutually compounding errors of grammar, the first error being NAMING that implies the LOCAL existence of a thing-in-itself, and the second, conflating error being GRAMMAR that notionally equips the NAMING-instantiated thing-in-itself with the notional power of SOURCING actions and developments.
Once can see what this DOUBLE ERROR in the examples given by Nietzsche (LIGHTNING FLASHES) and Nishitani (FIRE BURNS), the DEVICE of using language to impute LOCAL SOURCING OF ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS.
This DEVICE is what is needed to EFFABLE-IZE the INEFFABLE dynamic of TRANSFORMATION. TRANSORMATION associates with a fluid environment as when a mountain of mud SLUMPS and raises the valley floor, blurring the BINARY distinction between ‘mountain’ and ‘valley’ in the sense that FIGURE (mountain) and GROUND (valley) are not understood as TWO but are understood as ONE. If one understands this in 3 or 4 dimensional terms, one can intuit the FIGURE and GROUND relation of a hologram or holodynamic wherein FIGURE and GROUND truly ARE ONE. Modern physics supports this concept of the holographic universe wherein the visible forms are condensations of wave-field energy so that there is only the Wave-field, the local concentrations of energy within it being what we call ‘material’ entities. In other words, ‘material entities are ‘made of field’ (concentrations within the field) so that the Wave-field IS the ‘whole ball of wax’ which means that FIGURE and GROUND are ONE.
Wave-field resonances can explain material structures without resorting to the assumptions of anything LOCAL such as Newton’s ‘corpuscles’ or Democritus’ ‘atoms’ (Greek for atomos of ‘indivisible’).
The thing to remember in here is that the Wave-field understanding of reality implies NONLOCALITY while the Newtonian physics understanding of reality implies LOCAL thing-in-itself existence.
While reality that is NONLOCAL (e.g. TRANSFORMATION) is INEFFABLE the abstract concept of LOCAL as in LOCAL objects and LOCAL events opens the way to EFFABLE representation as, for example, with FIRE BURNS or PATHOGENS KILL (e.g. COVID 10 KILLS).
If the solar radiance experienced by the earth increased perhaps due to an orbital shift induced by a close-passing comet, the Earth would be impacted by being included within this TRANSFORMATION and what had been rainforest might become desert in this TRANSFORMATION. So, TRANSFORMATION is a NONLOCAL phenomenon and one can’t point it as occurring RIGHT HERE in a particular “LOCATION” as suggested by language constructs such as FIRE BURNS or PATHOGENS KILL. Wave-field dynamics are like this; i.e. they are NONLOCAL phenomena like resonance as induces DUNING. In order to EFFABLE-IZE DUNING, we must reduce the NONLOCAL to LOCAL and we do this by bringing out the DOUBLE ERROR of language and grammar to construct DOUBLE ERROR based representations such as ‘the DUNE is growing higher and longer and is shifting towards the coast’.
So what follows is a slightly expanded discussion of how THE EAST uses the DOUBLE ERROR only as a tool of INFERENCE of the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL reality while THE WEST uses the DOUBLE ERROR as the explicit OPERATIVE REALITY.
MODERN PHYSICS SUPPORTS the EAST (DOUBLE ERROR that effable-izes as INFERENCE of the INEFFABLE reality), but NOT the WEST (DOUBLE ERROR that effable-izes as the ACTUAL REALITY).
In the EAST as in modern physics, propositions used to capture physically real developments are arranged in the form of a web of relations that INFERS relational development without dependency on any LOCAL material foundation; i.e. by the technique of BOOTSTRAPPING or ‘the surprise version of the game of Twenty Questions’ which simply INFERS relational development without dependency on LOCAL material things-in-themselves.
In the WEST, as in Newtonian physics, the propositions used to capture physically real developments are designed to convey EXPLICIT, LOCAL existing entities e.g. ‘JOHN DUNBAR’ is the unique name given to a notional explicit THING-IN-ITSELF whose actions and accomplishments are seen as LOCAL and self-authored, while the EAST’s ‘Dances with Wolves’ is a relational form within the TRANSFORMING relational continuum where BOTH ACTIONS and BEING are NONLOCAL
The WEST (“WEST” and “EAST” are references to contrasting modes of understanding reality) understands FIRE BURNS as ONE POLE of a mutually defining BRINARY PAIR, which, like BOOK-ENDS, define respective “LOCAL” START AND FINISH to phenomena as with CONSUMPTION and PRODUCTION, GROWTH and DECLINE, RISE and FALL. This binary construction supports the DOUBLE ERROR and is an abstraction that is not embraced by the EAST, the latter understanding realty in terms of NONLOCAL RELATIONAL TRANSFORMATION of the overall landscape, which does not fall into the BINARIZING TRAP that the WEST falls into. That is, TRANSFORMATION is the reality and it is NONLOCAL.
BINARY LOGIC allows the intellect to abstractly break the NONLOCAL TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM down into LOCAL double error based LOCAL pieces in the manner of “FIRE BURNS”. There is no such thing as LOCAL as is suggested by FIRE BURNS,, these words and grammar (aka ‘the DOUBLE ERROR) delivering an intellectual conceptualization of something LOCAL which is DESTROYED and gone missing rather than the entire landscape undergoing NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION as is the understanding that comes with the BOTH/AND logic of the INCLUDED medium. The dimple on a child’s smiling cheeks or the beauty mark on a young woman (a ‘local growth’) does not simply register in our consciousness as a LOCAL point of fact, but TRANSFORMS the relational gestalt, the overall impression that contributes to our understanding of things.
One CAN and CANNOT ENVISAGE the ‘burned patch’ in the forest fire GROWING larger in reciprocal relation to the SHRINKAGE of the ‘unburned landscape’. That is, these are not TWO PHENOMENA but ONE and that ONE phenomenon is TRANSFORMATION. In other words; CONSUMPTION (ELIMINATION) and PRODUCTION (CREATION) ARE NOT “TWO”, they are only “ONE” (FIGURE AND GROUND ARE ONLY ONE). The EAST and WEST difference in understanding pivots from these two options for reality.
TRANSFORMATION is the primary REALITY,
‘Sometimes I go about in pity for myself and all the while a great wind is bearing me across the sky.’ — Ojibwa saying
Since we are INCLUDED in TRANSFORMATION, we cannot SEE IT AS A VOYEUR looking in from the outside. In other words, our experience of inclusion in TRANSFORMATION is INEFFABLE. When we are included in the resonances of a desert sandstorm, if we were to remain in one position, the DUNING would (resonance aka Wave-field dynamic) will include us and if it were strong enough, it would gather humanings together in a dune-line assemblage, but it is generally only strong enough to pull into aesthetic duning-form, the smaller bits like sand grains, dust, straw etc.
The point is that we are included in something greater than ourselves but there is no way to capture this with language because of the limitations of language. We make use of the DOUBLE ERROR of language and grammar, as Nietzsche points out, to reduce the ineffable transforming relational continuum (TRANSFORMATION) into ‘effable pieces’. For example, we are included in a seasonal (Wave-field) dynamic wherein vegetation is desiccated in the hot phase and we have a kind of sense of the ominous exposure to FIERY TRANSFORMATION here which is INEFFABLE because NONLOCAL.
When FIRE erupts, it is LOCAL and thus EFFABLE and we can invoke the DOUBLE ERROR and say FIRE BURNS. The first error is NAMING that imputes LOCAL thing-in-itself-existence to APPEARANCES within the TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM, and the second, CONFLATING error, is GRAMMAR which imputes to the NAMING-instantiated thing-in-itself, the power of SOURCING actions and developments.
SO, “FIRE BURNS” and “LIGHTNING FLASHES” are exemplary of who we use language and grammar to fabricate DOUBLE ERROR based LOCALIZING of the inherently (in NATURE) NONLOCAL phenomenon of TRANSFORMATION. This ABSTRACT LOCALIZING of inherently NONLOCAL-HENCE-INEFFABLE TRANSFORMATION delivers a REDUCED-to-LOCAL RE-presentation of the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL.
Now, when I see a forest fire ‘heading our way’, I am not limited to pointing and shouting, which might not be very effective if I was on a hilltop and trying to alert my friends and family down below in the valley who are unaware of their risk of being trapped in a dead end canyon as the forest fire advances towards the point of entrapping them. If I had smoke signal language, I could alert them so that they could escape with their lives. The smoke signal-based language, even though very crude, could be very valuable in stirring up actions and developments that cultivated and sustained balance and harmony in the relational dynamic.
FIRE BURNS! also leads to the understanding that FIRE INJURES AND KILLS. This is an exposure that can also be turned around and used as a WEAPON.
TRANSFORMATION is NONLOCAL while FIRE is LOCAL.
TRANSFORMATION is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL while FIRE is EFFABLE-because-LOCAL.
Language can shift our understanding from TRANSFORMATION which is NONLOCAL and INEFFABLE but sensory-experience-able, by allowing us to formed linguistic REPRESENTATION which REDUCE the NONLOCAL-and-thus-INEFFABLE to the LOCAL-and-thus-EFFABLE. For example, “DUNING” (resonance that is a purely NONLOCAL resonance phenomenon), we can reduce with the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR to ‘DUNES’ that ‘grow larger and longer and shift across the DESERT’. Note that FIGURE AND GROUND are NO LONGER ONE, as in a fluid or Wave-field dynamic, but language and grammar reduction has re-rendered FIGURE and GROUND as TWO things-in-themselves both of which are imputed to be LOCAL and INDEPENDENTLY EXISTING in their own ‘separate’ right. This is a conceptual VIEW that REPLACES the FIGURE-AND-GROUND-ARE-ONE understanding of our actual sensory experience of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum.
This reduction of the ineffable to something effable by way of the DOUBLE ERROR is where Emerson’s talk of ‘the tool runs away with the workman, the human (LOCAL) with the Divine (NONLOCAL)” comes from; i.e. being ONE WITH EVERYTHING (included in the NONLOCAL) as in being included in the Wave-field or being included in TRANSFORMATION (the indigenous aboriginal GREAT MYSTERY or GREAT HARMONY) is what is being referred to as ‘the Divine’.
COVID 19 as employed in WESTERN CULTURE language and grammar is the notional splitting out of a micro-relational form and using the DOUBLE ERROR to portray it as LOCAL thing-in-itself with its own powers of SOURCING actions and developments; i.e. as a PATHOGEN which we impute to be on the attack against another DOUBLE ERROR based LOCAL thing-in-itself we call a ‘human’. The BINARY LOGIC employed in this splitting apart of PATHOGEN (a kind of ‘FIRE-BURNS’ or PATHOGENS INJURE/KILL LOCAL sourcing concept) is problematic, and as F. David Peat suggests, is evidently the SOURCE of illness. What is does is removes our sense of being included in TRANSFORMATION and has us install in our psyche, the sense of a DOUBLE ERROR based LOCAL BEING with LOCAL SOURCING powers.
We are now administering the coup-de-grace blow to sensory-relational understanding, by way of the COVID 19 PATHOGEN concept which drives home the notion of ourselves as ‘independently-existing things-in-ourselves’ and thus has us abandoning our orientation to cultivating and sustaining relational balance and harmony, … in order to preserve ourselves as ‘local, independent bodies’.
WHICH IS THE “REAL US’? … BECAUSE IF “MITAKUYE OYASIN” IS THE REALITY, then our natural orientation would be our HEALTH in terms of the health and harmony of the overall relational web-of-life in which we are included, the resonant health of which is OUR HEALTH.
For us to re-orient our behaviours in order to optimize ‘our health’ in a manner wherein we envisage ourselves as LOCAL, independently-existing things-in-ourselves, is to SUB-OPTIMIZE our REAL HEALTH which is the health of the overall relational complex (the transforming relational continuum) in which we and all share inclusion in.
The attempt to isolate and eliminate notionally ‘independent’ biotic PATHOGENS and CRIMINALS is to SUBOPTIMIZE our real ‘RELATIONAL HEALTH’.
Our actions against the perceived-as-pathogen COVID 19 takes this WESTERN CULTURE ABERRATION to a new extreme.
As with CRIMINALS, we applying the DOUBLE ERROR of language and grammar within a situation of relational imbalance, to REDUCE what is really going on here (NONLOCAL relational TRANSFORMATION), by way of intellectual language-and-grammar-stimulated abstraction, … to LOCAL SOURCING of ILLNESS and INJURY of the ‘FIRE BURNS’ variety.
The natural response to emergent relational dissonance is to act so as to subsume the relational imbalance/dissonance by re-cultivating relational balance/resonance. WITHIN THIS BROAD CONCEPT WE MAY INCLUDE, BUT NOT FULLY SUBSTITUTE, ACTIONS SEEN AS THE ELIMINATON OF PATHOGENS. IN OTHER WORDS, WHAT IS NEEDED IS THE RESTORING OF RELATIONAL BALANCE AND HARMONY, … with the understanding that MITAKUYE OYASIN, “we are all related” (the transforming relational continuum is the all-inclusive Wave-field aka ‘the Tao’).
PATHOGENS are the names we give to forms involved in eruptions of relational dissonance who are in the minority while the majority may be working to perpetuate an UNNATURAL NORMALITY which is untenable to some of the relational collective. Thus the REAL goal of subsuming the UNNATURAL NORMALITY and restoring relational balance and harmony may be ‘missed’ because here we are dealing in the purely relational concept of TRANSFORMATION which is INEFFABLE because NONLOCAL, whereas the concept of ELIMINATING PATHOGENS is LOCAL and EFFABLE and LOGICAL, although INCOMPLETE, being based on DOUBLE ERROR reduction.
In other words, relational dissonance may be inherently NONLOCAL (as with ‘resonance’) and while it has no LOCAL SOURCE, NONLOCAL relational imbalance induces rebalancing dynamics (e.g. as with Robin Hood and Jean Valjean) which APPEAR LOCAL and which language and grammar can RE-CAST AS LOCAL by means of the DOUBLE ERROR of language and grammar (‘FIRE BURNS’, ‘CRIMINALS STEAL’, PATHOGENS KILL). In other words, the DOUBLE ERROR of language and grammar can be used to recast dynamic phenomena that are intrinsically NONLOCAL as if they were LOCAL. In this case, even though RELATIONAL TRANSFORMATION (which is NONLOCAL) lies at the origin of the dissonance, because the DOUBLE ERROR TALK (talk can be dangerous!) reduces this NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION to LOCAL SOURCING (FIRE BURNS etc.), we are called into action to PUT OUT THE FIRE.
It’s one thing to understand FOREST FIRES in this way, and what else can we do because while we can control or at least LIMIT the local “FIRE BURNS” interpretation, we are unable to control or even ‘get our mind around’ the all-including TRANSFORMATION that is the ROOT SOURCE of (or, better, MANIFESTLY IS) the desiccating of the vegetation so that it becomes a bomb waiting to go off. Like the drunk looking under the streetlight for the watch he lost on a dark stretch of the street, because the search conditions are better there, we deal with FIRES on an ad hoc basis because we are UNABLE to EFFABLE-IZE TRANSFORMATION, the nonlocal dynamic that is all-inclusive (the Wave-field, aka ‘the Tao’) which includes us. We can’t point to the Tao (Wave-field) and describe it as if it were ‘something out there’ accessible to our vision because it is the all-including flux-continuum that includes us.
So, when we say ‘FIRE BURNS’ or ‘COVID 19 KILLS’, we are using the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING-plus-GRAMMAR to render EFFABLE-because-LOCAL, the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL.
Robin Hood steals, Jean Valjean steals, FIRE BURNS and COVID 19 KILLS … are all examples of the ‘DOUBLE ERROR’ of language and grammar as used to render EFFABLE-because-LOCAL, the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL.
This DOUBLE ERROR is used in the construction of logic-based REASON and is why Nietzsche observes;
“Reason” in language!—oh what a deceptive old witch it has been! I fear we shall never be rid of God, so long as we still believe in grammar. — Nietzsche
Goedel’s theorem of the INCOMPLETENESS of all finite logical propositions is pointing to this same limitation of language. For example, FIRE BURNS is a logical proposition that is finite whereas TRANSFORMATION as in the transforming relational continuum IS NOT FINITE, so it does not qualify as LOGIC. To be more specific, “TRANSFORMATION” doesn’t qualify for the EITHER/OR logic of the EXCLUDED medium where FIGURE and GROUND are TWO and since TRANSFORMATION involves the situation where FIGURE AND GROUND ARE ONE, it lies BEYOND LOGIC ,… but let me quickly qualify that; BEYOND that particular type of logic, the EITHER/OR logic of the EXCLUDED medium where FIGURE and GROUND are TWO separate and independent things-in-themselves.
In quantum logic as in modern physics, it is another understanding because it requires BOTH/AND logic of the INCLUDED medium where FIGURE AND GROUND ARE ONE (e.g. where DUNING and DESERTING are ONE and where INHABITANT and HABITAT are ONE as where HURRICANE and ATMOSPHERE are ONE and BOIL and FLOW are ONE and FIRE and TRANSFORMATION are ONE.
The intellectual impression of LOCAL SOURCING given to us by our deploying of the DOUBLE ERROR, is the only kind of LOCAL SOURCING there is and it is NOT PHYSICALLY REAL. In physically real world of our sensory experience there is only TRANSFORMATION and we refer to this also as ‘the Wave-field aka the Tao’.

So, the point of this commentary is that TRANSFORMATION is the primary REALITY which is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL, and the corollary point is that we use the DOUBLE ERROR of language and grammar to REDUCE the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL to the EFFABLE-because-LOCAL, as in the case of “FIRE BURNS” and/or ‘COVID 19 KILLS” and/or “ROBIN HOOD and JEAN VALJEAN STEAL”. These are all DOUBLE ERROR language and grammar constructions we engineer to render the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL, ‘EFFABLE-because-LOCAL’.
“FIRE BURNS” and “COVID 19 KILLS” etc. etc. are REDUCTIONS from the more complex reality wherein TRANSFORMATION is the real (natural) dynamic. Such REDUCTIONS are needed in order to render the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL, … halfways EFFABLE-because-LOCAL.
Wittgenstein makes the point that we can only use these double error based logical propositions as a ‘ladder of inference’ that tickles our intuition into a relational understanding that is INEFFABLE (not explicitly capturable in language). If I speak to you of DUNING, you will probably think in terms of ‘resonance’ and the interesting and aesthetic forms that develop with zones of resonance as if we put some salt or sand on a drum-head and set it to vibrating with a drum stick. The DUNING informs us of the presence of a field of resonance (Wave-field) that is not a ‘thing-in-itself’ but which induces the development of relational forms WHICH APPEAR LIKE THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES (e.g. DUNES). We can apply the DOUBLE ERROR so as to SET THESE RELATIONA FORMS UP AS NOTIONAL LOCAL THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES WITH THEIR OWN (GRAMMAR-GIVEN) POWERS OF SOURCING ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS.
This is how we START OFF from purely relational resonance phenomena (TRANSFORMATION), and proceed to invoke the DOUBLE ERROR to notionally REDUCE TRANSFORMATION to local NAMING-instantiated things-in-themselves with GRAMMAR invoked powers of SOURCING actions and developments, … thereby REPLACING TRANSFORMATION (which is impossible to describe in language because its nonlocality makes it ineffable) with DOUBLE ERROR abstractions such as “FIRE BURNS” and “COVID 19 KILLS”.
WE WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have learned how to make good use out of this tool for the REDUCTION part of its usage, but we have a big problem on our hands because instead of using it as a TOOL OF INFERENCE, we are using it for the construction of an imputed ‘EXPLICIT REALITY’. We are forgetting Wittgenstein’s reminder;
6.54 My propositions are elucidatory in this way: he who understands me finally recognizes them as senseless, when he has climbed out through them, on them, over them. (He must so to speak throw away the ladder, after he has climbed up on it.)
He must surmount these propositions; then he sees the world rightly.
