The Psychological Origin of the Conservative – Liberal Bipolar Disorder



The reality of our sensory experience of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum is not capture-able in a language architecture, such as English, that employs ‘primitives’ such as “local things in themselves’ with notional (grammar-given) powers of local sourcing of actions and development.

For example, the common language architecture which Benjamin Whorf labels ‘Standard Average European’ (SAE) facilitates representation by way of a SUBSTITUTE REALITY based on what Nietzsche calls the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR.  In this language we use RATIO to imply LOCAL GROWTH by first using NAMING to impute LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF EXISTENCE, and conflating this with GRAMMAR to deliver to the ‘listener’ or ‘reader’ the IMPRESSION of, for example, GROWTH of the notional LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF; e.g. ‘The HURRICANE is GROWING LARGER and more POWERFUL and is DEVASTATING NEW ORLEANS.’

NOTA BENE!: This ‘DOUBLE ERROR’ of NAMING and GRAMMAR  lets us construct representations such as this which imply LOCAL SOURCING of actions and development.  Thus we say that ‘the TOWN is GROWING’ when WHAT IS ACTUALLY UNDERWAY is that there is TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE.  That is, the LANDSCAPE is, IN REALITY, continually transforming and WITHIN THIS TRANSFORMING, there is development (TOWNING) that those languages which preserve the understanding of FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE (e.g. town and country as one) will capture, while our WESTERN CULTURE popular languages will BREAK FIGURE AND GROUND APART INTO “TWO” for the expedient purpose of a more discriminating representation, AT THE PRICE OF LOSS OF REALITY since such language introduces a new SUBSTITUTE REALITY featuring the EITHER/OR logic of the EXCLUDED medium wherein NAMING-instantiated LOCAL THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES EITHER ‘exist’ OR ‘do not exist’.

In other words, the abstraction we introduce into our Standard Average European language representations LIBERATES our rhetorical REPRESENTATION of reality from the impasse of INEFFABILITY as associates with a reality that is in continual flux, as where the LANDSCAPE is continually TRANSFORMING and within that continuum there is TOWNING which is INEXTRICABLE from the LANDSCAPE because it is NOT SOMETHING SEPARATE IN REALITY, but is only SEPARATE by APPEARANCE, as with the WHORL in the FLOW in a fluid dynamic.





That title may seem to foretell an apocryphal unfolding, made even worse by the fact that END of GROWTH will bring with it the END of TIME, but my impression is that it is more like tearing a poster off a wall only to expose another poster that precedes it, or even the discovery that what was presumed to be the blank face of a wall is a window into another world that had been hidden by the SUBSTITUTE REALITY pasted over it.

That the END of TIME is coming has already been pronounced by Modern physics but the timeliness of a package deal which removes GROWTH as well feels imminent.  GROWTH and TIME are cohorts that come hand-in-hand like the slowly building pile of sand in the hourglass.  GROWTH happens over TIME within an empty and uninvolved containing space, and it is this empty containing space that ensures that GROWTH is LOCAL.

Of course, while we can make that happen with language, is it really possible to separate the GROWTH of the TOWN on its own, from the LANDSCAPE.  Yes, I know, GRAMMAR lets us engineer this separation but if we examine where the TOWN meets the GROUND, there is a blurriness there as to where the TOWN stops and the LANDSCAPE begins.




The quote/unquote “REALITY” we ‘look into’ in our WESTERN CULTURE television NEWS coverage is not our SENSE-EXPERIENCE REALITY since that is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT.   In other words, the TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM aka the Wave-field aka ‘the Tao’, … is not something that we can represent in words and PICTURES and discuss as if it were a reality viewable on a screen out there in front of us.

However, we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS “DO” formulate REPRESENTATIONS that we purport to be ‘of REALITY’ as in our NEWS coverage reporting.

It is important to understand that the REALITY that we can REPRESENT is a SUBSTITUTE REALITY that is NOT the REAL REALITY of or actual sensory experience of inclusion in TRANSFORMATION; i.e. our inclusion in the transforming relational continuum that is NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT.

The reason why we generate and employ a SUBSTITUTE REALITY is because it is impossible to capture in LANGUAGE, a  representation of the transforming relational continuum we and everything are included in.  Kepler notes our voyeur view of the Solar System is based on what he calls ‘raticinative intellection’ while our understanding of inclusion in the Solar System entails ‘intuitive intellection’ which is INEFFABLE since being inside a relational continuum wherein everything is in flux allows us no access to fixed references and no sense of LOCALITY, leaving us with an understanding of reality purely in terms of “intuitive intellection”;

Under these circumstances, it will not have been surprising if anyone who has been thoroughly warmed by taking a fairly liberal draft from that bowl of Pythagoras which Proclus gives to drink from in the very first verse of the hymn, and who has been made drowsy by the very sweet harmony of the dance of the planets begins to dream (by telling a story he may imitate Plato’s Atlantis and, by dreaming, Cicero’s Scipio): throughout the remaining globes, which follow after from place to place, there have been disseminated discursive or ratiocinative faculties, whereof that one ought assuredly to be judged the most excellent and absolute which is in the middle position among those globes, viz., in man’s earth, while there dwells in the sun simple intellect, πῦρ νοερὸν, or νοῦς, the source, whatsoever it may be, of every harmony.” – Johannes Kepler, ‘Harmonies of the World’  [ διανοὶα or ‘dianoia’ = discursive intellection],  νοῦς or ‘nous’ = intuitive intellection],

The point is the overall dynamic that we experience inclusion in is ‘the Tao that cannot be told’ aka the all-including Wave-field which is available to our intuition but not to our rational voyeur visual scrutiny.

The world that we look out at as voyeurs wherein is not the world of our sensory experience of inclusion therein but is instead a SUBSTITUTE REALITY that we CAN represent in our DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR constructions.

When we use language constructs such as ‘the TOWN is GROWING, this is no longer the reality of TRANSFORMATION because if it were, we could only speak of the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE in which TOWNING would be a VERB without there being any ‘TOWN’ as a NOUN or NAME implying a LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF, notionally with its own powers of GROWTH.  That would then be the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR that Nietzsche is pointing out.  By using language to form representations featuring this abstract LOCAL thing-in-itself we call ‘the TOWN’, notionally with its own (grammar-given) powers of SOURCING actions and development (e.g. GROWTH, WE ARE CONSTRUCTING A SUBSTITUTE REALITY that is now EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT whereas TRANSFORMATION which is the stuff of our raw reality of sensory experience therein is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT as is the nature of the Wave-field in which forms are continually gathering and scattering.

As Lao Tzu and Modern physics have pointed out, the REAL REALITY is INEFFABLE so that in order to use language to even INFER the reality that is INEFFABLE because in continual flux, we have to construct a SUBSTITUTE REALITY to set up a system of INFERENCE that points to the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT ‘real Wavefield reality’.

The issue being discussed in this essay is that we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS, while having had to devise an abstract SUBSTITUTE REALITY that is EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT; e.g. ‘the TOWN is GROWING in size and productivity’ in place of ‘the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE, have fallen into believing in the SUBSTITUTE REALITY as if it ‘were real’ which imparts to us certain BELIEFS that we have bundled into the SUBSTITUTE REALITY.  For example, while our sensory experience is of inclusion in a TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE wherein everything is in flux, so that we are stuck in the same situation as Heraclitus and Lao Tzu wherein ‘the Tao that can be told is not the true Tao’; i.e. we are stuck with the problem of INEFFABLITY of the reality our our sense experience lives.  While we can construct the ‘work around’ using language and grammar to construct a SUBSTITUTE REALITY that “IS EFFABLE”, our WESTERN CULTURE MISTAKE has been to employ the SUBSTITUTE REALITY as if it were the REAL REALITY.

The problems we are generating for ourselves by so doing, which the EAST and Modern physics avoids by sustaining a non-explicit representation, are outlined in terms of SEVEN ABSTRACT BELIEFS which should never have been ‘beliefs’ but which should have remained ‘tools of inference’.  But as Emerson noted, the tool of inference has run away with the workman, the human with the divine’ (i.e. the EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT’ has run away with the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICT)

The following SEVEN ABSTRACT BELIEFS derive from the SUBSTITUTE REALITY.  The problem lies in our WESTERN CULTURE practice of ELEVATING these SEVEN ABSTRACT INFERENCES (tools that are EFABBLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT for inferring the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT reality) from tools of inference to pseudo-realities.

For example, the concept of GROWTH (instead of TRANSFORMATION) implies the existence of a LOCAL, INDEPENDENT THING-IN-ITSELF that is changing on its own and without being part of the TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM.  This leads to the GROWTH ECONOMY problem wherein we plow up the Wilderness in the service of GROWING agricultural and industrial production.  However, that only makes sense within THE SUBSTITUTE REALITY.  In the REAL REALITY, the GROWTH of cultivated land is in conjugate relation with the REDUCTION of Wilderness.  So, in REALITY, what is going on is the conjugate of GROWTH of cultivated land and LOSS of Wilderness which is, in other words, TRANSFORMATION of the overall LANDSCAPE.  The implication is, that THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS GROWTH.

As this essay points out, our continued use of BINARY LOGIC hold us prisoner within the SUBSTITUTE REALITY which we are taking to be real; i.e. our WESTERN CULTURE social dynamic orients to the GROWTH of construction and production as if this were ‘reality’ while it is instead an abstract SUBSTITUTE REALITY, and we are increasingly experiencing undesirable consequences of our error.

Our WESTERN CULTURE SOCIAL DYNAMIC is shaped by the following SEVEN abstract beliefs that set up a SUBSTITUTE REALITY.

-1- The ERRONEOUS BELIEF that GROWTH as something REAL.  GROWTH is NOT REAL, there is only TRANSFORMATION.  The notion





Marie Antoinette was “born with a silver spoon in her mouth”.  She did not know what it felt like to be ‘starving’ and could not be coming from sensory experience when she heard complaints from starving people’ (This is a caricature but the archetype is relevant’).

There is CONFUSION in our society arising from how different people’s behaviours respond differently to the mix of intellectual knowledge and sensory experience.

WE WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have an evident predisposition to putting rational intellection into precedence over sensory experience, in contrast to the EAST, indigenous aboriginal cultures, Taoism/Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta.

Consider the different concepts of JUSTICE in the EAST versus the WEST.  In the EAST, the emergence of dissonance is understood as NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT (relational) while in the WEST, the emergence of dissonance is understood as LOCAL and EXPLICIT (causal). Should we expect to be able to solve for a LOCAL source of a disturbing experience?  In WESTERN JUSTICE, YES, … In EASTERN JUSTICE, NO!  The difference between INTELLECTUAL KNOWLEDGE and SENSORY EXPERIENCE (CARNAL) KNOWLEDGE comes into play here since our sensory experience informs us that life’s interactions can be like the circus game of Bumper Cars where a local Perpetrator-Victim duo can be LOCALIZED by making those two intellectual designations though the real source of the dissonance is NONLOCAL and UNKNOWABLE, as David Bohm affirms is the message of Modern physics

This note explores the peculiar option of WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS which elevates the explicitness and certainty of INTELLECTUAL KNOWLEDGE into an UNNATURAL PRIMACY over the innate uncertainty of SENSORY EXPERIENCE.

Language is an immeasurably useful tool but of course it has to make compromises in capturing a REPRESENTATION of reality and this note homes in on the nature and impact of such compromises.

REPRESENTATION of how humanings in the Wave-field (the Tao) aka ‘humans’ ‘fit in to the overall fluid dynamic’ can be constructed if we invoke the use of binary logic based terminology to figuratively SPLIT APART “FIGURE” and “GROUND” so that we can address ONE THING AT A TIME.  This gives us a picture of the INHABITANT within a separate and independent HABITAT which lends itself to the language based system of NAMING and GRAMMAR.  With this type of LANGUAGE, we can notionally LIBERATE relational FLOW-FORMS and set them up, in language and thus in the PSYCHE as notional LOCAL things-in-themselves, notionally with THEIR OWN LOCAL powers of SOURCING actions and developments.

With this DOUBLE ERROR system, as Nietzsche has pointed out, we can build langauge-based REPRESENTATIONS of the dynamic world of our sensory experience.  Thus, for example, the HUMANINGS in the flow (i.e. in the Wave-field aka the Tao) which is the transforming relational continuum which are RELATIONAL FEATURES WITHIN THE FLOW can be SPOKEN OF, … that is to say, be given a language-based representation,  .. in the abstract terms of LOCAL things-in-themselves with GRAMMAR-given powers of LOCAL SOURCING of actions and development.   That is, this reduction that language capture performs, allows the construction of representations in terms of LOCAL things-in-themselves, notionally with their own LOCAL SOURCING powers of movement and growth.








The MALE ASSERTIVE EGO, when it rises to IMBALANCE over FEMALE ACCOMMODATING  RECEPTIVITY, is the embodiment of PSYCHOLOGICAL BIPOLAR DISORDER.  This DISORDER finds expression in the one-sided MALE ASSERTIVE ABSTRACTIONS of GROWTH and PRODUCTION, which are NOT REAL but are the PETITIO PRINCIPII that imply “LOCAL” SOURCING agency that conjures up a SUBSTITUTE REALITY that takes the place of the NATURAL ANDROGYNOUS REALITY OF TRANSFORMATION which is NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT (i.e. ‘relational’) and conformant with the WAVE-FIELD of Modern physics.

While the ANDROGYNOUS WAVE-FIELD dynamic of TRANSFORMATION is NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT such that we must ‘pass over it in silence’, the SUBSTITUTE REALITY that is a REDUCTION to “to the POLE” of MALE EGO-ASSERTING CONSTRUCTION opens up a rhetorical avenue for abstract LINGUISTIC REPRESENTATION in terms of NAMING-instantiated LOCAL THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES with notional powers of LOCAL SOURCING of actions and developments.  This one-sided MALE ASSERTIVE SUBSTITUTE-REALITY is characteristic of WESTERN CULTURE ‘operative reality’, and is an ABSTRACTION based departure from the EASTERN CULTURE’s embrace of the ANDROGYNOUS reality of RELATIONAL TRANSFORMATION which is REAFFIRMED as the REALITY of our sensory experience by MODERN PHYSICS.

The reality of Marie Antoinette (“Let them eat cake”) is one in which an authority protects the status quo regardless of issues of rising imbalance.   Response to imbalance entailing the shifting of provisions from areas of surplus to areas of deficiency (i.e. balance-restoring actions) which are basic to NATURE, are in WESTERN CULTURE, recast in terms of the ‘work of a PATHOGEN’.  The tales of Robin Hood and Jean Valjean bring to the surface this clash between WESTERN CULTURE rational judgements which identify as PATHOGENS, the balancing agents that arise naturally in the world.

Here we seem to have a conflict between NATURE and WESTERN CULTURE since WESTERN CULTURE has a DOUBLE ERROR based belief in the LOCAL SOURCING of actions and developments which sets up the icons of PATHOGEN and BENOGEN in which EGO plays the KEYSTONE role.  That is, if the individual’s EGO informs him those things which are NAMED such as himself, are the LOCAL SOURCE of powerful GOOD WORKS, then the ‘geometry’ is established and sitting there waiting for the psyche to ‘fill in the blanks’ and come up with a LOCAL SOURCE of powerful EVIL WORKS.

“LOCAL SOURCING” is ABSTRACTION.  It is the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR ABSTRACTION as Nietzsche points out.  However, in the common belief of us WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS, ‘LOCAL SOURCING’ fires up the EGO and the EGO instills the BELIEF in the “REALITY” of “LOCAL SOURCING”.   And while the WESTERN CULTURE individual may condition his psyche with the DOUBLE ERROR to the point of believing he is the LOCAL SOURCE of wonderful, beneficial actions, … this very thought opens up the possibility that LOCAL SOURCING OF EVIL ACTIONS is just as possible.

Thus, in a perverse way, EGO ‘locks into place’ the concept of the PATHOGEN, the LOCAL SOURCE of EVIL ACTIONS.
