The CONFUSION from LANGUAGE
Yes, imagine that you yourself are designing language. What a tough job to capture in language our complex sense-experience!
EAST and WEST split along the same lines as Modern physics and Newtonian physics; i.e.
WEST: We can architect our language making RELATIONS the most basic concept and in this case develop understanding by constructing a matrix of relations. e.g. there is TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM in which case we can acknowledge that we are treating only a portion of a much larger ‘animal’ (overall transforming relational UNUM) so that when we speak of TOWNING, we are thinking of a kind of PIMPLE that is developing on a larger body where that PIMPLE is just the CHANGING APPEARANCE of the larger body in the same sense as the developing spot of mold on a loaf of bread that signals to us that the bread is undergoing TRANSFORMATION so that the real dynamic is NONLOCAL and relational and the change is NOT LOCAL and EXPLICIT as it may appear.
EAST: The spot of mold is NOT a BINARY LOGIC based SEPARATE THING-IN-ITSELF as it would be imputed to be with BINARY LOGIC, but instead requires QUANTUM LOGIC to capture it where FIGURE (spot of mold) and GROUND (loaf of bread) ARE ONLY ONE and it is simply APPEARANCE FORTIFIED BY NAMING and GRAMMAR (the DOUBLE ERROR) that encourages us to REDUCE it with RATIONAL THINKING to FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO. As Schroedinger says, SUBJECT and OBJECT are ONLY ONE). THERE IS NO FRAGMENTATION GOING ON HERE OR ANYWHERE ELSE IN SENSE EXPERIENCE, FRAGMENTATION OCCURS ONLY IN A PSYCHOLOGICAL “SUBSTITUTE REALITY” where BINARY LOGIC RULES.,
FRAGMENTATION into FIGURE and GROUND as TWO comes from OUR WESTERN CULTURE brand of language. We opted for a language architecture based on the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR where we use NAMING to psychologically break out a PART of the whole and then use GRAMMAR to imply that the NAMING-instantiated thing-in-itself IS THE LOCAL AUTHOR OF ITS OWN ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS. You can see how this simplifies OUR ARTICULATING of sense-experience reality which is of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum aka the WAVE-FIELD aka the Tao, … because this type of language allows us to CHOP OUT LOCAL PIECES OF THE TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM and use GRAMMAR to set them up as if they were the LOCAL AUTHORS of their own actions and developments. This IN TURN IMPLIES that that these NAMING-based FRAGMENTS are situated in an ABSOLUTE EMPTY SPACE OF INFINITE EXTENT. The MENTAL PICTURING of a FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO BINARY LOGIC based SUBSTITUTE REALITY is what we are employing as our OPERATIVE REALITY.
But the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR REPRESENTATION gives us a SUBSTITUTE REALITY featuring LOCAL things-in-themselves that move about and interact within a notional ABSOLUTE EMPTY SPACE of INFINITE EXTENT. While this is ABSTRACTION, because it is COMMONLY EMPLOYED (if not ‘believed in’) it serves as a means of communications that can put people on the SAME PAGE. We know what one another are talking about when we speak of ‘THE MOON’ regardless of whether ‘the MOON’ means a body of green cheese to some and ‘thar be DRAGONS to others’. What the NAMIES U.S. or RUSSIA mean to one person may be something very different than what these NAMES mean to others, but their use within a conversation facilitates sharing, however imperfect.

So, that is the WESTERN CULTURE LANGUAGE DESIGN that gives us a means of sharing our sense-experience, and it does so by FRAGMENTING SENSE-EXPERIENCE REALITY (of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum) and using GRAMMAR to ANIMATE the FRAGMENTS. This is BINARY LOGIC based since these FRAGMENTS must pass the test of “EITHER ‘they exist’ OR ‘do not exist’” as local THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES.
If we ask ourselves whether MICHAEL EXISTS, it is a loaded question as in logic terms a PETITIO-PRINCIPII since it IMPLICITLY “BEGS THE QUESTION” inviting us to respond and in responding, validating the implied EXISTENCE of a PERSISTING THING-IN-ITSELF, and if we ‘go along with this’ and AFFIRM the EXISTENCE OF MICHAEL, then WE ARE NO LONGER UNDERSTANDING, as our sense-experience is informing us, THAT WE ARE INCLUDED IN A FLUID TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM because the affirmed EXISTENCE of a LOCAL, EXPLICIT THING-IN-ITSELF takes us OUT OF SENSE-EXPERIENCE REALITY and puts us into a SUBSTITUTE REALITY which is ABSOLUTE, EMPTY and INFINITE and a container for LOCAL EXPLICIT NAMING-INSTANTIATED THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES.
ONLY WE WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS HAVE BOUGHT INTO THIS REDUCTION OF OURSELVES … FROM relational forms in the transforming relational continuum … DOWN TO LOCAL NAMING-INSTANTAITED THINGS-IN-OURSELVES with notional GRAMMAR GIVEN POWERS OF AUTHORING ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS, … a REDUCTION that takes us into an abstract SUBSTITUTE REALITY that prevails OPERASTIVELY within the WESTERN CULTURE SOCIAL DYNAMIC because we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have implictly agreed to support belief in it and it appeals to many because of its EGO-INFLATING properties whereby it imputes to us the POWERS of SELF-AUTHORED ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS.
OR, more precisely, rather than the POWERS of ‘SELF-AUTHOREDE’, .. ‘the POWERS of NAME authored’ since that sense of authorship is coming from the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR. Well, now we have made possible, within the INTELLECTUAL REPRESENTATIONS of DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR based LANGUAGE ARCDITECTURE, the classical WESTERN CULTURE HERO AND VILLAIN PRADIGM. But this is only among those us who have agreed to use a LANGUAGE ARCHITECTURE with primitives that invoke “LOCAL AUTHORING of actions and developments”. HEY! There is no LOCAL AUTHORING in Modern physics nor in indigenous aboriginal culture reality, nor in Taoism/Buddhism and Adviata Vedanta. Things are far more complex, implicit, relational, and NONLOCAL in sense-experience reality than can be represented in terms of LOCAL AUTHORING.
NEVERTHELESS, THE LOCAL AUTHORING, FRAGMENTATION based REPRESENTATION of reality is a viable LANGUAGE ARCHITECTURE that allows us to SHARE… WHAT, EXACTLY. It allows us to share imagery of a SUBSTITUTE REALITY based on LOCAL, EXPLICIT FRAGMENTS, notionally with their own powers of AUTHORING ACTIONS and DEVELOPMENT. INSTEAD of the MALE ASSERTIVE “CONTINENTAL DRIFT” which implies the CONJUGATE SEA-FLOOR SPREADING (both superficial surface effects) we may understand SPACE as an all-pervading WAVE-FIELD that is undergoing TRANSFORMATION wherein FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-ONE (as where we understand matter as a condensation of the electromagnetic field whereby FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-ONE).
RECIPE FOR CONSTRUCTING THIS SUBSTITUTE REALITY;
-1- NAMING: Use NAMING as a “first ERROR” to identify a flow-form such as a HURRICANE.
-2- GRAMMAR: use GRAMMAR to impute to the FIRST ERROR of NAMING, its own local AUTHORING powers of GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT and ACTION/PRODUCTION.
These two steps aka the DOUBLE ERROR as Nietzsche calls them, serve up for our WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS, a means of communication in terms of a SUBSTITUTE REALITY which is based on FRAGMENTS; i.e. ALTHOUGH we see TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE wherein the TOWNING and the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE “ARE ONE” as in QUANTUM LOGIC (Figure and ground are one), we use our WESTERN CULTURE language architecture to FRAGMENT this understanding coming from our sense-experience and INTELLECTUALIZE it with the ABSTRACT FRAGMENTING capability of the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR to fashion REPRESENTATIONS that are LOCAL and EXPLICIT such as ‘the TOWN is GROWING’ where TOWN and LANDSCAPE ARE TWO..
Once we have a QUORUM of people ready to play EITHER of these games (QUANTUM LOGIC based representation or BINARY LOGIC based representation), we have a means of sharing experiences. In the second option (BINARY LOGIC) we can share experience with REPRESENTATIONS based on FRAGMENTIZED SUBSTITUTE REALITY. That’s where we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS STILL ARE TODAY.
This FRAGMENTNATION based SUBSTITUTE REALITY would be ok as a simply GO-BY if it were employed KNOWINGLY, only as a CRUDE GO-BY, but it is instead being employed as THE OPERATIVE REALITY, as if TOWNS and HUMANS “REALL ARE” “INDEPENDENT NAMING-INSTANTIATED THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES WITH GRAMMAR GIVEB POWERS OF AUTHORING ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS, AS IN THE “SUBSTITUTE REALITY” THAT WE WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS ARE NOW COMMONLY DEPLOYING AS OUR OPERATIVE REALITY.
WE ARE TAUGHT TO “BELIEVE” THAT “TOWNS GROW’ and that ‘TOWNS AUTHOR ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT” (i.e. that NAMING-INSTANTIATED things-in-themselves aka FRAGMENTS of reality, can GROW and AUTHOR ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT, since our LANGUAGE has an architecture that employs this FRAGMENTATION based SUBSTITUTE REALITY technique for constructing representations of reality.
NOTE that this particular linguistic REPRESENTATION architecture (unlike the flow-based linguistic REPRESENTATION architecture) allows us to FRAGMENT reality (i.e. to represent sense-experience reality in the abstract terms of FRAGMENTS). This technique allows us to create REPRESENTATIONS of reality in LOCAL and EXPLICIT terms; e.g. ‘the TOWN is GROWING’. Once we have reduced TOWNING IN THE TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE, a reality that is NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT (RELATIONAL) to a new SUBSTITUTE REALITY FRAGMENT “TOWN” that is GROWING larger and more populous and PRODUCTIVE’, we PSYCHOLOGICALLY MAKE OUR ENTRANCE INTO A NEW LANGUAGE-based FRAGMENTED SUBSTITUTE REALITY.
If we now VISIT THE TOWN and with VOYEUR VIEWING EYES ‘explore “ITS” streets and courtyards etc. we make a MENTAL MAP of the TOWN with streets and avenues and a TOWN HALL etc. and this EXPLICIT, LOCAL PICTURE based MODEL of the TOWN seems to TAKE OVER from our awareness of the overall inclusion in the transforming relational continuum, even though we have seen TOWNS buffeted within the continuing transformation and undergoing abandonment and TOWNS experiencing much destruction in WAR and are having been ‘processed with the TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM are now rubble over-run by wildgrass and shrubs and dissected and dispersed by streams so that the LANDSCAPE that they were always part of in a FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE sense is evident once again. Like the DEA ABSCONDITA, it never actually left since the transforming overall GESTALT was and remains the primary reality even though we cannot speak of the NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT in the same mouthfuls as we speak of the LOCAL and EXPLICIT.
IT WAS NEVER THE CASE THAT ‘THE TOWN GREW’; … it was always the case that ‘the LANDSCAPE TRANSFORMED’ so that our treating the TOWN as a separate FRAGMENT of reality and imputing to it its own POWERS OF AUTHORING GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT are only part of an INTELLECTUAL SUBSTITUTE REALITY REPRESENTATION GAME based on a particular type of LANGUAGE ARCHITECTURE that FRAGMENTS sense-experience reality which is the sense-experience of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum.
LANGUAGE THAT FRAGMENTS gives us a shareable portrait NOT OF SENSE EXPERIENCE REALITY, but of an INTELLECTUAL ABSTRACT SUBSTITUTE REALITY based on separate FRAGMENTS or LOCAL, EXPLICIT PIECES such as TOWNS.
BUT HOW CAN A TOWN GROW WITHOUT A RECIPROCAL SHRINKING OF WILDERNESS? ANSWER: IT CAN “ONLY” GROW IF WE “IMAGINE” that instead of it being innately included in the transforming relational continuum of our sense-experience, it is INSTEAD INCLUDED IN A SUBSTITUTE REALITY THAT IS ABSOLUTE, EMPTY AND INFINITE WHICH SUPPORTS THE ABSTRACTION OF THERE BEING A NOTIONAL ABSOLUTE EMPTY AND INFINITE CONTAINING SPACE THAT ACCOMMODATES LOCAL AND EXPLICIT THINGS-IN-THEMELVES (FRAGMENTS) NOTIONALLY WITH GRAMMAR-GIVEN POWERS OF AUTHORING THEIR OWN ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS; E.G. ‘THE TOWN IS GROWING LARGER AND MORE POPULOUS AND PRODUCTIVE”.
HEY! THERE IS NO ‘TOWN’ WITH ITS OWN ‘AUTHORING POWERS’, THERE IS ONLY THE TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM WITHIN WHICH TOWNING IS A RELATIONAL DYNAMIC “WITHIN” THE OVERALL TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM. OUR WESTERN LANGUAGE ARCHITECTURE HAS BEEN DESIGNED SO AS TO FASHION REPRESENTATIONS OF REALITY IN A FRAGMENT-BASED MANNER WHERE WE CAN START WITH A NOTIONAL LOCAL AND EXPLICIT PART-WISE (FRAGMENTED) SUBSTITUTE REALITY, SUCH AS ‘THE TOWN” AND BUILD OUR LANDSCAPE IN a ‘PIECEMEAL’ MANNER ‘FROM THE BOTTOM UP’ BASED ON NOTIONAL NAMING-INSTANTIATED FRAGEMENTS.
HEY, ITS JUST A LANGUAGE, AND IT WORKS, BUT WHAT IS BEING CONVEYED IS NOT SENSE EXPERIENCE REALITY, BUT INSEAD A SUBSTITUTE REALITY BASED ON FRAGMENTS THAT WE FABRICATE, AS NEITZSCHE POINTED OUT, WITH THE DOUBLE ERROR OF NAMING AND GRAMMAR; I.E. THE TOWN IS GROWING AND BECOMING MORE POPULOUS AND PRODUCTIVE. THE TOWN, REPRESENTED THUS AS A LOCAL AUTHOR OF ITS OWN ACTIONS, DEVELOPMEN AND PRODUCTION, … IS NO LONGER UNDERSTOOD AS A RELATIONAL FEATURE WITHIN THE TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM. IN FACT, AS WE THINK ABOUT THE TOWN AS a LOCAL, EXPLICIT ENTITY GROWING IN ITS OWN RIGHT, THE TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM, WHICH IS NONLOCAL AND IMPLICIT, ABSENTS ITSELF FROM OUR ‘MENTAL VIEWING SCREEN’ AND WE SEE ONLY THE LOCAL AND EXPLICIT TOWN WITH ITS OWN POWERS OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.
OUR WESTERN CULTURE LANGUAGES “WORK THIS WAY; I.E. BY BREAKING THE TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM DOWN INTO FRAGMENTS AND CONSTRUCTING A FRAGMENTS BASED “SUBSTITUTE REALITY” THAT WE WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS HAVE OPTED TO EMPLOY AS “OUR OPERATIVE REALITY” ENVEN THOUGH IT IS PURE ABSTRACTION BASED ON THE DOUBLE ERROR OF NAMING AND GRAMMAR.
THIS IS WHERE BOHM’S WARNING COMES IN BECAUSE THIS WESTERN CULTURE CONSTRUCTION OF A FRAGMENT BASED SUBSTITUTE REALITY IS IN THE PROCESS OF DRIVING US, (WE, THE WESTERN SOCIAL RELATIONAL COLLECTIVE) “NUTS”!
1 FRAGMENTATION AND WHOLENESS (from Wholeness and the Implicate Order by David Bohm)
The title of this chapter is ‘Fragmentation and wholeness’. It is especially important to consider this question today, for fragmentation is now very widespread, not only throughout society, but also in each individual; and this is leading to a kind of general confusion of the mind, which creates an endless series of problems and interferes with our clarity of perception so seriously as to prevent us from being able to solve most of them.
Thus art, science, technology, and human work in general, are divided up into specialities, each considered to be separate in essence from the others. Becoming dissatisfied with this state of affairs, men have set up further interdisciplinary subjects, which were intended to unite these specialities, but these new subjects have ultimately served mainly to add further separate fragments. Then, society as a whole has developed in such a way that it is broken up into separate nations and different religious, political, economic, racial groups, etc. Man’s natural environment has correspondingly been seen as an aggregate of separately existent parts, to be exploited by different groups of people. Similarly, each individual human being has been fragmented into a large number of separate and conflicting compartments, according to his different desires, aims, ambitions, loyalties, psychological characteristics, etc., to such an extent that it is generally accepted that some degree of neurosis is inevitable, while many individuals going beyond the ‘normal’ limits of fragmentation are classified as paranoid, schizoid, psychotic, etc
EGO associated with BELIEF in LOCAL AUTHORING has us WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS giving firm continuous support to the concept of LOCAL AUTHORING which is where the FRAGMENTING is coming from. The CRACKS in the façade of this SUBSTITUTE REALITY belief system show up in such dynamics as the conservative – liberal polarizing standoff. This polarizing starts with the belief in LOCAL AUTHORING which is EGO based BULLSHIT which is not seen in the social relational dynamics of a POTLATCH culture, for example, where one’s personal good fortunes are understood to derive from unbounded relational complexity rather than from LOCAL AUTHORING (LOCAL AUTHORING IS ABSTRACTION deriving from the DOUBLE ERROR OF NAMING AND GRAMMAR).
We WESTERN CULTURE ADRENTS have constructed a social system that celebrates and rewards the IMPUTED AUTHORS OF BENEFICIAL ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS and denigrates and punishes the IMPUTED AUTHORS OF DETRIMENTAL ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS. However, in Modern physics as also in indigenous aboriginal, Buddhist and Advaita Vedanta cultures, there is no such belief in LOCAL AUTHORING of actions and developments and this rejection of LOCAL AUTHORING is supported by Modern physics.
In fact, we WESTERN CULTURE ADHRENTS have made ourselves PRISONERS of OUR OWN LANGUAGE BASED ABSTRACTIONS.
A picture held us captive. And we could not get outside it, for it lay in our language and language seemed to repeat it to us inexorably. –-Wittgenstein
For example, the picture of the TOWN gives us a sense of the LOCAL and EXPLICIT in which case, the more focus on it, the more we LOSE AWARENESS of the fluid reality of our sense experience of inclusion in transformation wherein there is TOWNING in the transforming relational continuum (this is NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT and I SENSE-EXPERIENCE REALITY SUPPORTED as one fits with our understanding of inclusion in the WAVE-FIELD aka the Tao.
RELATIONAL LANGUAGES never let go of this greater reality of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum. Our WESTERN CULTURE FRAGMENTATION based LANGUAGE ARCHITECTURE and the SUBSTITUTE REALITY we construct with it, we are persistently using as our OPERATIVE REALITY. When I say ‘we’, I intend we ‘WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS’ in general, although it is certainly possible for us to live within this WESTERN CULTURE while believing in reality as inclusion in the transforming relational continuum as in Modern physics and as in my own understanding of reality which, as a friend who is a Buddhist Lama says, is a layover to Buddhist understanding. The point, in my view, is that ‘The majority has no monopoly on the truth’ as Giordano Bruno said as they hauled him off to be burned at the stake in 1600 in the Campo dei Fiori in Rome for the heresy of ‘relativity’ (physics). However, in our WESTERN CULTURE even the silliness of MAN-MADE GLOBAL WARMING (which implies an inhabitant-habitat BINARY LOGICAL SPLIT) is deemed REAL by the WESTERN CULTURE SOCIAL COLLECTIVE because of the popular DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR based LOCAL AUTHORING BELIEF.
THERE ARE NO LOCAL AUTHORS in the transforming relational continuum which means that HUMANS are not the LOCAL AUTHORS of CHANGES IN THE EARTH’s CLIMATE (we are all included participants which is not the same as AUTHORS, the latter being EGO-based abstraction).
We are all included in the transforming relational continuum and POLLUTION is a manifesting of the continuing TRANSFORMATION but it NOT SOMETHING SEPARATE, it is the manifesting of RELATIONAL IMBALANCE just as CRIMINALITY is, and it is only our LANGUAGE-based penchant for imputing LOCAL AUTHORING that has us continually imputing LOCAL AUTHORING to all developments. Again, there is no LOCAL AUTHORING in a transforming relational continuum. When we humanings screw up the relational balancing, there is relational dissonance as manifests in pollution, but ‘POLLUTION’ is NOT a THING with its own powers of AUTHORING NASTY EFFECTS but it is how IMBALANCE manifests.
Just as in social dynamics, the CRIMINAL/PATHOGEN is the manifesting of IMBALANCE in the social dynamic and the REMEDY is NOT the ELIMINATION of the alleged PATHOGEN but the restoring of balance. ROBIN HOOD BEHAVIOURS are induced by IMBALANCE in the natural pursuit of restoring BALANCE and this is all RELATIONAL dynamics. Once we start MISINTERPRETING reality by FRAGMENTING everything and imputing LOCAL AUTHORING POWERS to the FRAGMENTS, this puts us (WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS) into a PURIFICATIONIST mode where we seek to IMPROVE SOCIETY by removing the perceived AUTHORS of destructive/injurious actions and developments and encouraging and rewarding the perceived AUTHORS of constructive/beneficial actions and developments.
PROBLEM: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS LOCAL AUTHORING! BELIEF if LOCAL AUTHORING is where FRAGMENTATION comes from.
