A PRELIMINARY NOTE ON “NONLOCALITY”

When we read written narratives, we have the option of understanding ACTIONS and DEVELOPMENTS as being either LOCALLY AUTHORED or NONLOCALLY AUTHORED (e.g. as in a BUMPER-CAR-GAME.   Intellectual works involve this same ambiguity in regard to the their ‘origin’ or ‘authorship’.  Newton spoke of ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’ and Michel de Montaigne spoke of bees that picked things up from here and there unintentionally which contributed to unfolding reality in a manner that was not of their deliberate intention.  This suggests a reality that is more complex than simple LOCAL AUTHORING and is more like a BUMPER-CAR GAME wherein WE ARE NOT AUTHORS of our actions and developments, due to our inclusion in the transforming relational continuum.  As in the BUMPER CAR GAME, we may APPEAR to be the AUTHOR of an action even though the action does not ORIGINATE with us, thus we are NOT THE AUTHOR but we are instead a PARTICIPANT in a relational dynamic that transcends our LOCAL ACTIONS and RELATED DEVELOPMENTS, as in the case of the honey bees.

Our investigation will reveal that there is no such thing as a LOCAL AUTHOR of actions and developments, this being ABSTRACTION that derives from the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR as Nietzsche points out.  In other words, language allows us to formulate representations of reality such as ‘bees make honey’ but the imputing of LOCAL AUTHORING is simplifying abstraction as in Nietzsche’s example of the DOUBLE ERROR; ‘Lightning flashes’ where the flashing IS the lightning and there is no LOCAL AUTHOR called ‘lightning’.   In the same sense there is an overall, all-including relational dynamic in which bees and honey-making are included such that speaking in terms of the BEE as a LOCAL AUTHORING AGENT is abstraction born of the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR.

WE WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS are in the habit of constructing A SUBSTITUTE REALITY based on LOCAL AUTHORING of actions and developments based on the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR.  While the reality of our sense experience is of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum which is a NONLOCAL DYNAMIC, NONLOCAL DYNAMICS are INEFFABLE since our WESTERN language accords to the LOCAL and EXPLICIT the foundatonal role.  While statements that imply LOCAL AUTHORING such as ‘the bee makes honey’ DO AN END-RUN around the obstacle of INEFFABILITY of our sense-experience reality of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum which is NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT, what we are putting ourselves into, with such DOUBLE ERROR based abstraction, is a SUBSTITUTE REALITY featuring notional (NAMING-INSTANTIATED) THING-IN-ITSELF BEING with notional (GRAMMAR-GIVEN) powers of AUTHORING actions and developments.  This REDUCED to EFFABLE-because-lOCAL-and-EXPLICIT SUBSTITUTE REALITY facilitates the construction of the Apollonian pseudo-“reality”.

Problems develop when we employ the SUBSTITUTE REALITY (the Apollonian abstraction which is only good for INFERENCE of the Dionysian [fluid or Wave-field] reality, as a DIRECT SUBSTITUTE REALITY.  These problems characterize modern WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENT social dynamics.

The following EIGHT points (numbered in German) list the ‘basic ingredients’ that go into our WESTERN CULTURE construction of a NAMING and GRAMMAR-based SUBSTITUTE REALITY that is so familiar to us that we automatically ‘pick up on it’ (through reading or hearing English or one of the ‘Standard Average European’ (Whorf’s terms) languages.

The SAE language SERVES UP FOR US A “SUBSTITUTE REALITY” which is a SIMPLER REALITY that the REAL REALITY of our SENSORY EXPERIENCE: i.e. it is “SIMPLER” to express in language.

Yes, what I am saying (which has been said many times by others, such as Poincaré) is that trying to construct REPRESENTATIONS of reality with language based on fixed entities (nouns or names implying LOCALLY EXISTING THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES) is IMPOSSIBLE in the sense that such a language cannot represent a flow-continuum (the transforming relational continuum aka the Wave-field aka ‘the Tao’ wherein FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-ONE.   The architecting of a LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF based language has, by definition, a FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO topology wherein the FIGURE “MOVES THROUGH” the GROUND and does not capture situations like the HURRICANE in the ATMOSPHERE understood as a HURRICANING OF THE ATMOSPHERE implying the REAL FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE topology.

Here we have the primary architectural design criterion used in the development of SAE languages such as English; i.e. SIMPLICITY.  And what is meant by simplicity in language architecture is AVOIDANCE of having to capture the entire transforming relational continuum when talking about our experiences, since, IN REALITY (i.e. in the REALITY of our sense-experience of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum aka the Wave-field aka the Tao), there is just one continually transforming world, which we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have chosen to RE-PRESENT in a PIECE-MEAL fashion.

EXAMPLE: Where our sensory experience is informing us that THE LANDSCAPE IS TRANSFORMING and that this includes the TOWNING as GROWTH that is conjugate with SHRINKING OF WILDERNESS, our choice of language architecture has us speak in terms of ‘the TOWN’ as if it were a LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF which was the GRAMMATICAL AUTHOR of its own GROWTH, as in ‘the TOWN is GROWING’.

Here we ‘kiss goodbye’ to REALITY, the sense-experience reality of our inclusion in a TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE wherein TOWNING is manifest, NOT simply in terms of “A TOWN” that is ITSELF GROWING and DEVELOPING, … but in the context of TOWNING as an included feature within the overall TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE which also includes the CONJUGATE SHRINKING of the WILDERNESS.

OUR WESTERN CULTURE SORCERY-based SUBSTITUTE REALITY

AUTHOR’S PREFACE: Language that has a dependency on the abstract voyeur viewable concept of LOCAL THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES is ‘not up to the task’ of capturing the REALITY of an all-including transforming relational continuum wherein everything is in flux.

Engineering a language based scheme for REPRESENTING a reality that is in continual flux, involves some ‘trickery’.  The ‘bootstrapping’ approach described by Wittgenstein is to use the notional ‘existence’ of ‘local things’ to establish a web of relations among, whereupon the purely relational web will be the ‘take-away’ and the ‘things-in-themselves’ disposable expedients;

The thing-based illustration e.g. of the TOWN that is GROWING with its many streets and buildings ‘under construction’ is a PICTURABLE CARTOON which we could flesh out with STICK-FIGURE WORKERS and RESIDENTS or with a high resolution DOCUMENTARY FILM.  The narration accompanying the CARTOON can describe, in great detail, the construction activity including the importation of construction materials, the quarrying of sand and gravel for concrete, the smelting of iron ore for steel beams, the logging and milling of trees for lumber, the hiring and training of construction workforce, etc. etc.

However convincing a ‘reality’ captured in this documentary, because of its VOYEUR representation mode, it can never move beyond its CARTOON status in that ‘what is going on’ it is always ‘out there in front of us’ and the workers always seem to be moving around as if they are ‘free things-in-themselves’ driven by their internal instructions, as informed by some ‘master plan’ or some previously acquired skills.

AT SOME DEPTH WITHIN OURSELVES, we INTUITIVELY understand that this CARTOON activity we picture as ‘going on out in front of us’ is contributory to the constructing of an intellectual SUBSTITUTE REALITY that liberates the CARTOON characters from the transforming relational continuum, and re-establishes them as LOGICAL OBJECTS participating in a VISIBLE CONSTRUCTION DYNAMIC.

SUCH PSYCHE-INFORMING CARTOONS play the same role as ‘LOGICAL PROPOSITIONS’ in Wittgenstein’s above comments.  In other words, these CARTOONS are NOT to be taken literally;when he has climbed out through them, on them, over them. (He must so to speak throw away the ladder, after he has climbed up on it.”

The high resolution filming of the construction of the TOWN is one of those THROW AWAY LADDERS.   The indigenous aboriginal people whose sense-experience is of inclusion in the transforming landscape, ‘see’ (intuit) ‘the TOWN’ as a TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE, and NOT as some ‘LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF’ accorded ‘its own local BEING’ thanks to the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR of Standard Average European language constructions.

In our sense-experience reality, THERE IS NO “LOCAL TOWN THAT IS GROWING”, … THERE IS ONLY “TOWNING IN THE TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE” (i.e. in the transforming relational continuum aka the Wave-field aka the Tao).  The MENTAL PICTURE of THE TOWN THAT IS GROWING is a VOYEUR VIEWABLE CARTOON that is not qualified as a SUBSTITUTE for the REALITY of TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE.

WATCH OUT!  THE POINT IS THAT DIFFERENT language architectures induce intellectual understanding of sense-experience reality in different ways!  THE CARTOON reality where we “SEE” ant-like workers swarming over the new TOWN-SITE and CONSTRUCTING the NEW TOWN is a CARTOON-like visual presentation, as could be captured in a DOCUMENTARY FILM, that gives us the impression that the TOWN is ‘under construction’ and is GROWING LARGER and MORE POPULOUS as the new dwellings become OCCUPIED.

Since the REAL REALITY (sense-experience reality) is that of TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE, the CARTOON in which workers and residents are continually constructing new edifices and GROWING the LOCAL TOWN is a PICTURE-supported SUBSTITUTE REALITY that is INTELLECTUAL ABSTRACTION (hence ‘CARTOON’) that is NOT SENSE-EXPERIENCE SUPPORTED.

In WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENT SOCIETY, because the language architecture gives a foundational role to the abstract concept of LOCAL SOURCING of actions and development, by way of the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR, the CARTOON representations made thus available support the fabrication of a SUBSTITUTE REALITY which is LOCAL SORCERY based.  No matter how convincing the documentary film footage of the CONSTRUCTION of the NEW TOWN, it remains, in ESSENCE, a CARTOON which is hijacking, in the psyche, and SUBSTITUTING FOR, the REAL REALITY of the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE (i.e. the transforming relational continuum).

We WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have become STUCK within the ‘simplified’ SUBSTITUTE REALITY of our own making; i.e. the TOOL of CARTOON based RE-presentation of reality has (as Emerson observes) ‘run away with the workman’).  As in indigenous aboriginal languages and as in Bohm’s ‘Rheomode’ language, there is no TOWN, there is only TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE. The concept of ‘the TOWN that is GROWING’ is an artifact of the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR, a CARTOON.

The TURNING POINT for the WEST was RIGHT HERE where those who were influential in architecting our SAE (standard average Euopean) languages encountered the challenge to architecting language posed by our inclusion in a reality that is in continual flux;

It is more convenient to suppose the earth turns round, since thus the laws of mechanics are expressible in a much simpler language.— Henri Poincaré, ‘Science and Hypothesis’, Ch. VII Relative Motion and Absolute Motion

Once we design a language that makes a BINARY LOGICAL separation of the FIGURE from the GROUND we are on our way to CONSTRUCTION OF A SUBSTITUTE REALITY which is much SIMPLER than the reality of our sense-experience of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum.

We use ‘language’ to reduce our visual sensing of relational forms-in-the-flow to CARTOONS wherein the FIGURE is seemingly (thanks to NAMING and GRAMMAR, liberated from the GROUND.  These CARTOONS can ‘hold us captive’ so that we cannot ‘find our way back’ to our natural sense of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum, but remain captives of a CARTOON world;

The SIMPLIFIER in our WESTERN CULTURE SAE language architecture is the injection of the abstract concept of SORCERY or in more euphemistic terms, LOCAL AUTHORING of actions and developments by way of (as Nietzsche has pointed out), the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR.  SORCERY is the accessory to the NAMING and GRAMMAR based CARTOONING of reality.

Once we say ‘the earth turns round’, we hammer into the mind, BINARY LOGIC as the basis of our spoken (language-captured) SUBSTITUTE REALITY.   This WESTERN CULTURE spoken, or written, language-based REPRESENTATION of reality departs from our sense-experience reality once we choose the path of ‘more convenient’ representation wherein FIGURE-and-GROUND are TWO instead of ONE.  This split-up clears the way for a CARTOON like RE-PRESENTATION of our FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE sense-experience reality.  When we say ‘the TOWN is GROWING, we PICTURE the TOWN as a CARTOON THING that is GROWING.

Note that “the convenience” in the statement; “It is more convenient to suppose the earth turns round” is the convenience of SUBSTITUTING a figure-and-ground-as-TWO CARTOON wherein (the EARTH and SPACE are RE-PRESENTED as TWO distinguishable ontological entities,.

In this case, the FIGURE-as-a thing-in-itself and the containing SPACE as a thing-in-itself), … are abstractions we SUBSTITUTE for the figure-and-ground-as-ONE NON-PICTURE-REPRESENTIBLE REALITY (such a ‘picture’ would have to continue unbounded in spacetime)..  A local picturable piece of reality is a CARTOON that is NOT REALITY (e.g. the CARTOON of Robin Hood removing grain from the King’s granary is NOT REALITY.

This NON-PICTURE-REPRESENTIBLE FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE reality is our basic sense-experience reality as understood through Modern physics and in indigenous aboriginal cultures, Taoism/Buddhism and ADVAITA Vedanta.   Talking about it is beyond the scope of BINARY LOGIC and we instead need Quantum logic, the BOTH/AND logic of the INCLUDED medium as can be intuited from the finding that;

the elementary particles of matter are also, in their essence, nothing else than condensations of the electromagnetic field— Einstein, ‘Ether and the Theory of Relativity’

Since the relationship between matter and field requires the BOTH/AND logic of the INCLUDED medium and this is the general case in nature, it is misleading to construct representations of reality in FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO CARTOON terms.   Another way of saying this is that when we use FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO representation, we are constructing representations of a CARTOON-like SUBSTITUTE REALITY.  The proposition ‘The TOWN is GROWING’ is an example of  this CARTOON-like SUBSTITUTE REALITY wherein FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-TWO.

From Modern physics to Nietzsche’s Dionysian and Apollonian

The APOLLONIAN REALITY REDUCTION is popularly employed, in WESTERN CULTURE constructions of reality, as a SUBSTITUTE REALITY rather than as a TOOL OF INFERENCE of the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT DIONYSIAN REALITY.  This deployment of the APOLLONIAN as a SUBSTITUTE REALITY rather than as an INFERENCE of the ineffable-because-nonlocal-and-implicit DIONYSiAN REALITY is an error that we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS continue to be troubled by.

WHAT THIS IS ABOUT:  I am writing this to point out a major source of confusion coming from language-based representations of reality which continues to divide and polarize our WESTERN CULTURE social collective.  This involves what Nietzsche calls the DIONYSIAN and APOLLONIAN senses of reality.  While the following explanation will cover this, the DIONYSIAN reality corresponds with Modern physics wherein FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-ONE as with a CLOUD in the ATMOSPHERE (i.e. in Modern physics, material entities are condensations of the electromagnietic field), while the APOLLONIAN reality corresponds with Newtonian physics wherein FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-TWO (i.e. where the FIGURE is INDEPENDENT of the GROUND).  In Modern WESTERN CULTURE, the APOLLONIAN reality is currently dominant;

In a few years, it will be 150 years since Nietzsche called for a return to a Dionysian culture in his The Birth of Tragedy, at least in the Western context. Can we today say that the spirit of our contemporary culture is Dionysian? I would say not, although there are pockets of Dionysian practices in general culture and many Dionysian movements in the domain of the spirit. Modern dance was inspired by Nietzsche’s ideas on the Dionysian; Kandinsky appropriated the Dionysian into visual arts and thereby initiated abstract painting; in philosophy Bataille and Heidegger developed ideas on ecstasy and ecstatic disposition; installation and performance art forces human capabilities and operates along limit experiences; the whole drug culture, though fraught with nihilism (and in the US with racism) has Dionysian elements, and finally, psychoanalysis promotes the Dionysian indirectly insofar as it opens up new vistas and experiences for the non-rational in the human. However, these Dionysian movements of the last 100 years or so are divergent and lack coherence to a large extent. To make the Dionysian the spirit of our times will take much effort and also chance. As for the former, we can do our share; as for the latter, we can hope for Dionysus to appear.

To give a very simple example of what’s involved in this shift in understanding, the APOLLONIAN conceptualization has us see forms as LOCAL, INDEPENDENT THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES with their own powers of AUTHORING actions and development such that we see the TOWN as something that is GROWING larger and more populous and productive in a FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO sense (content and container as two).  However, the DIONYSIAN conceptualization has us see TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE as a RELATIONAL FORM in the transforming relational continuum.    The DIONYSIAN conceptualizing is supported by Modern physics while the APOLLONIAN conceptualization is supported by Newtonian physics and manifests in the WESTERN CULTURE concepts of INDEPENDENT BEING OF ‘HUMANS’, ‘NATIONS’ and ‘CORPORATIONS’.

Modern physics, indigenous aboriginal cultures, Taoism/Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta have this DIONYSIAN understanding that EVERYTHING-IS-RELATED (mitakuye oyasin).

 

This essay associates the DIONYSIAN with FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE, and the APOLLONIAN with FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO.

SUBSTITUTE REALITY and the PANDEMIC

We WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have built into our language architecture the binary logical abstraction of THE PICTURE;

By having a PICTURE “IN MIND”, our psyche shifts from FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE as in our INTUITION of TOWNING as something APPEARING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE to the RATIO-based (rational) THINKING in terms of the GROWTH of a notional LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF with “its own” (GRAMMAR-given) powers of AUTHORING actions and developments.  Instead of the TOWNING belonging to the TRANSFORMING which invokes our INTUITIVE ‘quantum logic’; the BOTH/AND logic of the INCLUDED medium, … we FALL BACK on the BINARY EITHER/OR logic of the EXCLUDED medium wherein the FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-TWO and the FIGURE is psychologically perceived as being SEPARATE and INDEPENDENT of the GROUND and thus free to AUTHOR ITS OWN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT.

INSTEAD OF TOWNING IN THE TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE (figure-and-ground-as-one) we invoke a SUBSTITUTE REALITY wherein we imagine a series of PICTURES of the TOWN that imply that the TOWN is AUTHORING its own GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT over “TIME” as if the FIGURE were contained with an EMPTY CONTAINING SPACE and thus free to AUTHOR its own GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT in a ‘figure-and-grround-as-two’ SUBSTITUTE REALITY. 

The reduction of TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE to ‘the TOWN that is AUTHORING its own GROWTH and PRODUCTION of PEOPLE, GOODS and SERVICES is “thanks to the abstract DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR wherein we invent an absolute empty and infinite ‘containing space” in which a notional independent FIGURE can move around in, within a FIGURE-and-GROUND-into TWO based SUBSTITUTE REALITY.

The abstraction of FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO is supported by the equally abstract BINARY LOGIC; the EITHER/OR logic of the EXCLUDED medium which brings with ambiguity such as ‘does the HURRICANE AUTHOR the stirring up of the ATMOSPHERE or does the ATMOSPHERE AUTHOR the stirring up of the HURRICANE?  NEITHER!  FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-only ONE, as Schroedinger, Bohm, Nietzsche and other philosophers have noted, and the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR does not REALLY liberate FIGURE-from-GROUND.

Insofar as language-based sharing of sensory experience is concerned, without introducing a FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO based SUBSTITUTE REALITY as we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS are doing, the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL REAL REALITY presents an obvious challenge to the architecting of language.  The EAST’s solution has been sussed out by Wittgenstein and expressed as follows in his final two propositions in TRACTATUS LOGICO-PHILOSOPHICUS.  These propositions outline the ‘ploy’ or ‘work-around’ of first using figure-and-ground-as-two language as an expedient for constructing a web of relations so that the RELATIONAL ASPECT, once achieved, can be employed as the new THINGLESS-CONNECTEDNESS figure-and-ground-as-one reality.  As Wittgenstein describes this ‘work-around’ provides an indirect means of expressing figure-and-ground as one (e.g. we can speak NOT ONLY of the GROWTH of the TOWN but also of the conjugate SHRINKING of the Wilderness (both of which are ‘figure-and-ground-as-TWO representations, … so that our INTUITIVE MIND can shift to the TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE) reality of our sensory experience of inclusion in TRANSFORMATION.

NOTA BENE: Our sensory experience of inclusion in TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL but it is nevertheless our experiencing of REALITY.  Our voyeur rational constructions of ‘the TOWN that we say is a LOCAL THING-in-ITSELF that is AUTHORING its own GROWTH and PRODUCTION of goods and services is a FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO ABSTRACTION that is given rational-mind legitimacy through our intellectual-linguistic construction of an entire SUBSTITUTE REALITY to support it.  The SUBSTITUTE REALITY that we construct with the DOUBLE ERROR or NAMING and GRAMMAR introduces ABSOLUTE EMPTY AND INFINITE SPACE as a CONTAINING GROUND to notionally (in the psyche) LIBERATE the FIGURE from the GROUND, employing GRAMMAR to animate the FIGURE as if in its own ‘independent’ right’.

WEST remains divided from EAST by the WEST’s practice of employing the figure-and-ground-as-two SUBSTITUTE REALITY as the OPERATIVE REALITY, while EAST, as also Modern physics, is using the intellectual abstraction of the figure-and-ground-as-two SUBSTITUTE REALITY … ONLY AS INFERENCE (a Wittgenstein ladder) for INFERRING the figure-and-ground-as-one REAL REALITY of our sensory experience of inclusion therein.

We WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS employ a LITERAL interpretation of DOUBLE ERROR based language that features LOCAL AUTHORING of ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS as in the figure-and-ground-as-two terms; ‘the TOWN is GROWING’.   By constrast, EASTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS employ a FIGURATIVE interpretation of DOUBLE ERROR based language where the conceptualizing is figure-and-ground-as-one based; ‘THERE IS TOWNING IN THE TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE’.

When we start to see PICTURES in our mind of, for example, A TOWN THAT IS GROWING, … WATCH OUT!   Because it may become difficult to ESCAPE from being haunted by (having the psyche hijacked by) that very limiting PICTURE of a LOCAL and EXPLICIT BEING with GRAMMAR given powers of LOCAL AUTHORING of GROWTH and PRODUCTION, eclipsing the NON-PICTURE-CONSTRAINED “TOWNING in the TRANSFORMING relational continuum, which cannot be ‘pointed to’ and ‘name-labelled’ since it is NONLOCAL-and-INEFFABLE.

WE ARE FREE TO UNDERSTAND —“THERE IS TOWNING IN THE TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE” as accords with inclusion in the transforming relational continuum (the Wave-field aka the Tao) when we hear the trigger words ‘The TOWN is AUTHORING its own continuing GROWTH and PRODUCTION’  (i.e. we understand that such ostensibly LOCAL AUTHORSHIP leaves holes and tree stumps all over the NONLOCAL landscape, thus supporting the understanding that THERE IS TOWNING IN THE TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE’ in spite of the linguistic reduction to notional LOCAL AUTHORING of GROWTH and PRODUCTION attributed to ‘THE TOWN’.  As Poincaré observes, ‘it is more convenient to suppose the earth turns round’ or in other other words, “it is more convenient to suppose that FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-TWO” and this is what we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have chosen to ‘teach’;

As regards the academies, they are established in order to regulate the studies of the pupils and are concerned not to have the program of teaching change very often: in such places, because it is a question of the progress of the students, it frequently happens that the things which have to be chosen are not those which are most true but those which are most easy. We WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have chosen the SIMPLIFICATION OF CONVENIENCE of SPEAKING as if FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-TWO and this SIMPLIFYING TOOL has, as Emerson notes, ‘run away with the workman, the human with the divine’; i.e. the EFFABLE figure-and-ground-as-TWO has run away with the INEFFABLE figure-and-ground-as-one.  As Schroedinger notes, the WEST but not the EAST has escaped this falling prey to mistaking our own figure-and-ground-as-two simplifications of reality for reality.  The figure-and-ground-as-one REALITY of Modern physics and the EAST (indigenous aboriginal cultures, Taoism/Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta), while INEFFABLE, can be, and is INFERRED.  As Schroedinger points out whether to make this leap of inference or not distinguishes EAST (affirmative) from WEST (negative);

… In Christian terminology to say: ‘Hence I am God Almighty’ sounds both blasphemous and lunatic. But please disregard these connotations for the moment and consider whether the above inference is not the closest a biologist can get to proving God and immortality at one stroke.

In itself, the insight is not new. The earliest records to my knowledge date back some 2,500 years or more. From the early great Upanishads the recognition ATHMAN = BRAHMAN (the personal self equals the omnipresent, all-comprehending eternal self) was in Indian thought considered, far from being blasphemous, to represent the quintessence of deepest insight into the happenings of the world. The striving of all the scholars of Vedanta was, after having learnt to pronounce with their lips, really to assimilate in their minds this grandest of all thoughts.

 Again, the mystics of many centuries, independently, yet in perfect harmony with each other (somewhat like the particles in an ideal gas) have described, each of them, the unique experience of his or her life in terms that can be condensed in the phrase: DEUS FACTUS SUM (I have become God).

Western Culture’s SUBSTITUTE REALITY that replaces TRANSFORMATION with GROWTH

The following are examples of our WESTERN CULTURE linguistic “short-cut” where we substitute GROWTH for TRANSFORMATION because GROWTH implies a FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO topology which is easier to express than the FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE actual reality.  Henri Poincaré explains our WESTERN CULTURE penchant for simplifying our conceptualization of space as follows;

And just as our Copernicus said to us : It is more convenient to suppose the earth turns round, since thus the laws of astronomy are expressible in a much simpler language ; this one would say: It is more convenient to suppose the earth turns round, since thus the laws of mechanics are expressible in a much simpler language. . This does not preclude maintaining that absolute space, that is to say the mark to which it would be necessary to refer the earth to know whether it really moves, has no objective existence. In other words, this assumption of FIGURE-AND-GROUND-AS-TWO is a CONVENTION that we have BUILT INTO LANGUAGE BASED REPRESENTATION because of the CONVENIENCE of the SIMPLIFICATION it delivers to the ARTICULATION OF REALITY, … ALTHOUGH this simplification introduces a SUBSTITUTE REALITY which DROPS OUT the natural FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE complexity of the REALITY OF OUR ACTUAL SENSORY EXPERIENCE.

Living a life of productivity and purpose, … does that sound appealing to us?

How about; living in (and co-cultivating) inspiring surroundings which continually beckon us to ‘rise to the occasion’ to fill a need that we had never contemplated would ‘call us to action’?

This is NOT an EITHER/OR question because we experience both the internal self-asserting ‘purpose and internal ‘’getting fired up’ with a personal achievement drive’ and we also experience the world calling to us to ‘rise to an occasion’ not of our own making, but a calling that INSPIRES us, where the FIRING UP is outside-inwardly SE-ductive as contrasted with inside-outwardly-PRO-ductive.

 

But just as EAST is EAST and WEST is WEST and ‘never the twain shall meet’, … we may fall into the PROUD BOYS mode of placing in the highest priority, GETTING THINGS DONE THAT NEED GETTING DONE AND GETTING THEM DONE PROPERLY, or then again, we may fall into the INSPIRED FEMALE mode of throwing ourselves body and soul into something that ARISES OUT OF THE BLUE that CALLS TO US  to throw ourselves ‘body and soul’ into ‘the vacuum’ of some needed action; e.g. to rescue the child being carried away in the raging rapids or to join others in pushing the car safely off the railway tracks before the train arrives.   We have BOTH PROUD MALE and INSPIRED FEMALE CAPACITIES which have been contrasted by the differing roles of the chicken and pig in an egg and bacon breakfast.

REWARD and PUNISHMENT, the BINARY LOGIC shapers of WESTERN CULTURE SOCIAL DYNAMICS are the basis of the abstraction of SORCERY aka LOCAL AUTHORSHIP.

 

The actions of REWARDING and PUNISHING induce in the rationalizing mind the impressions of LOCAL SORCERY aka LOCAL AUTHORSHIP.

 

That is; the presumption of a LOCAL AUTHOR  of an action or event is DELUSION born of the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR (Nietzsche).

 

THERE ARE NO LOCAL AUTHORS in the REAL WORLD of our sensory experience of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum aka the Wave-field aka the Tao, thus there is no basis for inventing LOCAL AUTHORSHIP  to REWARD and PUNISH.

 

To employ the BINARY of REWARD and PUNISHMENT is to back-handedly invoke BELIEF IN SORCERY.  EGO and SORCERY have a common source (BINARY LOGIC).

 

INSPIRATION FILLS THE HEART while EGO SWELLS THE HEAD, is an aphorism that draws our attention to deeply rooted dysfunction in WESTERN CULTURE wherein EGO has hijacked our understanding of reality and brought with it BELIEF in the ABSTRACT RATIONAL ABSOLUTES of GOOD and BAD.

 

REWARDING and PUNISHING follows from this HIJACKING of our intellect by the BINARIES of GOOD and BAD.

The NONLOCALITY of TRANSFORMATION and the OCCULT DOUBLE-ERROR REDUCTION to LOCAL AUTHORSHIP in ‘space’ and ‘time’.

Our sense-experience perception serves us up the abstract concept of a LOCAL AUTHOR when supported by the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING (which implies LOCAL things-in-itself being) and GRAMMAR (which conflates the error of NAMING by imputing the power of LOCAL AUTHORING of actions and development to the NAMING-instantiated [notional] THING-IN-ITSELF).  Thanks to this DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR, relational forms in the transforming relational continuum of NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION can be precipitated out of the INEFFABLE and EFFABLE-ized, … but where do they now ‘exist’?  The EFFABLE-because-now, thanks to the DOURLE ERROR, LOCAL and EXPLICIT entities are ‘living’ in an absolute, infinite emptiness, until we conjure up for them a tangible landscape for them to “INHABIT”.

This DOUBLE ERROR reduction in our reduction of visual forms to EFFABLE language-based objects-of RE-presentation furnishes these notional NAMING-instantiated THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES with GRAMMAR-given (notional) powers of AUTHORING actions and developments.

What is actually ‘going on here’ in this reduction to LOCAL of the reality of NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION, the stuff of our actual sensory experience of inclusion therein?

George Berkeley spoke to the issues involved;

(-1-) esse est percipi (aut percipere) – to be is to be perceived (or to perceive).”

Since we are included within a transforming relational continuum wherein ‘everything is in transformational flux’, including ourselves, the abstraction of BEING builds from sense-perception.

As Nietzsche later remined us, we CONJURE UP the abstract concept of LOCAL AUTHORSHIP of actions and development by employing a DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR to ‘effable-ize’ by imputing the notional existence of the LOCAL AUTHOR, the INEFFABLE dynamic of TRANSFORMATION aka the Wave-field aka the Tao, … the transforming relational continuum.

We can recognize in this, a general intellectualizing or rationalizing tool or ‘calculus’ which BREAKS INTO THE CONTINUUM OF TRANSFORMATION which is NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT, and RE-RENDERS it in terms of the LOCAL and EXPLICIT by way of a LOGIC-based DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR.

In exploring LOCAL AUTHORSHIP, we must recall Goedel’s theorem of the INCOMPLETENESS of all finite systems of logic.  For example, it is a logical TRUTH to place on record that ‘the HURRICANE is AUTHORING the stirring up of the ATMOSPHERE (the MALE-ASSERTIVE option), but it is also a logical TRUTH to place on record that ‘the ATMOSPHERE is AUTHORING the stirring up of the HURRICANE’ (the FEMALE-inductive option).   This ambiguity INEVITABLY crops us in language-based reductions of NONLOCAL (wave-field) TRANSFORMATION to LOCALLY AUTHORED (material) actions and developments.

Some form of REDUCTION is necessary to reduce the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL to the EFFABLE-because-LOCAL and our WESTERN CULTURE REDUCTION approach is to interject the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR, which, as just shown, brings with it an INNATE AMBIGUITY in that we can use EITHER a MALE-ASSERTIVE REDUCTION wherein the HURRICANE is stirring up the ATMOSPHERE  or a FEMALE-INDUCTIVE REDUCTION wherein the ATMOSPHERE is stirring up the HURRICANE (in the former there is assertive force while in the latter there is seductive inducement).

WESTERN CULTURE manifests a dominant use of the MALE-ASSERTIVE option for use in language-based reality construction.

NOTA BENE: It is important NOT to forget that our WESTERN CULTURE language-based reduction to EFFABLE-IZE the INEFFABLE reality of our sensory experience of inclusion in TRANSFORMATION, is TROUBLED by the ambiguity of the MALE-assertive and FEMALE-inductive options, and ambiguity which splits people into CONSERVATIVE and LIBERAL modes of understanding reality.  The Conservative reduces TRANSFORMATION to the MALE-assertive option (e.g. the HURRICANE is stirring up the ATMOSPHERE) while the Liberal reduces TRANSFORMATION to the FEMALE-inductive option (e.g. the ATMOSPHERE is stirring up the HURRICANE).  NEITHER OF THESE TWO BINARY LOGIC BASED OPTIONS IS ‘REALITY’ but BOTH are LOGICALLY TRUE (‘logic’ is abstraction that lives in a world where things EITHER ‘are’ OR ‘are not’).  This is an abstract intellectual SUBSTITUTE REALITY and NOT the real world of the transforming relational continuum of our sensory experience.

WESTERN CULTURE “SCIENCE” (pre-modern physics) is BUILT UPON binary logic based TRUTHS which are indeed LOGICAL TRUTHS and thus exposed to the Goede’s Theorem limitation in that “ALL FINITE SYSTEMS OF LOGIC ARE INNATELY INCOMPLETE”.

Thus we must be careful in constructing understandings based on LOGICAL TRUTHS , as by way of the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR since such TRUTHS are INCOMPLETE.   This problem of ‘incompleteness’ of ‘truth’ that we build into a complex suite of logical propositions can “COME BACK TO HAUNT US” where we are not ‘careful’ as in the case of CALCULUS;

“Berkeley contended that the practitioners of calculus introduced several errors which cancelled, leaving the correct answer. In his own words, “by virtue of a two fold mistake you arrive, though not at science, yet truth”

While the proposition that ‘the TOWN is GROWING LARGER and MORE PRODUCTIVE’ can be verified and confirmed as TRUE, this is an INCOMPLETE TRUTH in that it fails to acknowledge the greater reality of TRANSFORMATION of the LANDSCAPE wherein the GROWTH of the TOWN also entails, AT THE SAME TIME, the REDUCTION of WILDERNESS.

EVIDENTLY, while it is TRUE to speak of the GROWTH of the TOWN, it is NOT REALITY, since the REALITY is the continually TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE.

REALITY IS NONLOCAL AND AUTHORLESS

In the BUMPER CAR analogy of social interaction, the concept of a LOCAL AUTHOR vanishes since the origin of a collision can be mapped backwards into the NONLOCAL dynamics of a relational continuum.

BINARIZING the NON-BINARY reality of BUMPER-CAR dynamics by injecting the abstract concept of ‘the AUTHOR’.

If we IGNORE (for the moment if not permanently) the NONLOCALITY and AUTHORLESSNESS of BUMPER-CAR dynamic, … we can instead make the COLLISION the ‘STARTING POINT’ and then set out to ANALYZE the COLLISION in a BINARY LOGICAL sense of a SUBJECT and OBJECT interaction.  In this case we inject a simplified BINARY LOGIC based construction in terms of a LOCAL EVENT whose SOURCING can be conceived of as coming from EITHER of only TWO options; corresponding to a PERPETRATOR – VICTIM BIPOLAR event wherein it could be either the case that a BUMPER-CAR STOPPED WITHOUT WARNING, or a BUMPER-CAR FAILED TO STOP.  AMBIGUITY then arises as to designating a PERPETRATOR and VICTIM.  Generally speaking, in WESTERN CULTURE, the designation of PERPETRATOR will go to the BUMPER-CAR that FAILED TO STOP.

In EASTERN CULTURES, as in MODERN PHYSICS, our sensory experience of inclusion in a NONLOCAL dynamic which is RELATIONAL and AUTHORLESS is taken to be the BASE-CASE REALITY.  Therefore, no BINARY LOGIC based REDUCTION is made and the understanding of MITAKUYE OYASIN (all our relations) is embraced wherein reality is NONLOCAL and AUTHORLESS.

Nietzsche points out how this abstract concept of an AUTHOR of dynamics is a FALLACIOUS language and grammar based abstraction arising from TWO mutually supporting ERRORS..

Our judgement has us conclude that every change must have an author”;–but this conclusion is already mythology: it separates that which effects from the effecting. If I say “lightning flashes,” I have posited the flash once as an activity and a second time as a subject, and thus added to the event a being that is not one with the event but is rather fixed, “is” and does not “become.”–To regard an event as an “effecting,” and this as being, that is the double error, or interpretation, of which we are guilty.” – Nietzsche, ‘Will to Power’, 531

In the BUMPER-CAR dynamic which is innately NONLOCAL, the DOUBLE ERROR based structure of language which brings together NAMING and GRAMMAR to FABRICATE the notion of LOCAL SOURCING of actions and development, or in other words the “AUTHORING” of actions and developments, … the door is opened for the constructing of a SUBSTITUTE REALITY based notional NAMING-instantiated  LOCAL THINGS-in-THEMSELVES with notional GRAMMAR-instantiated POWERS of AUTHORING actions and developments.  This allows the language stimulating of the INTELLECTUAL CONSTRUCTION OF A SUBSTITUTE REALITY based on SUBJECT-OBJECT SPLITTING which, when OUTFITTED with GRAMMAR-given AUTHORING POWERS.
