As Nietzsche points out, REASON derives from a DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR, for example “the TOWN is GROWING’.

We might also speak of a TOWNING in the transforming LANDSCAPE

What we have here are TWO representation options

OPTION 1: FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-ONE.  In this option, the TOWNING is like the spotting on a transforming apple.  As the spot grows larger, the unspotted area shrinks in reciprocal proportion.  This is the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE mode of understanding this development.

OPTION 2: FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-TWO.  In this option, the TOWN is understood as a LOCAL thing-in-itself that grows larger RELATIVE TO ITSELF.   This is the so-called RATIO-NAL aka REASON based understanding and it is deeply entrenched in WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENT thinking.  REASON is referred to by Nietzsche as ‘the DOUBLE ERROR’ of NAMING and GRAMMAR (first we name the spot on the transforming apple ‘the TOWN’ and then we conflate this with GRAMMAR and say ‘the TOWN is GROWING LARGER’.  In other words we use RATIO to reference the GROWTH of the TOWN to ITSELF instead of acknowledging the pairing of the GROWING of the TOWN and the CONJUGATE SHRINKING of the WILDERNESS.

WHY DO WE WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS use RATIONAL THINKING (OPTION 2) so extensively?

Option 2 (FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-TWO) is BINARY LOGIC; i.e. the EITHER/OR logic of the EXCLUDED medium.

Option 1 (FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-ONE) is the QUANTUM LOGIC; i.e. the BOTH/AND logic of the INCLUDED medium.

The advantage of using BINARY LOGIC is that the dynamics of the FIGURE can be given representation INDEPENDENT of the dynamics of the GROUND.  In the example of TOWNING, BINARY LOGIC opens the way to descriptive representations of the GROWTH of the TOWN without the encumberment of addressing the TRANSFORMATION of the LANDSCAPE, even though TRANSFORMATION is the sensory experience grounded REALITY while GROWTH is RATIO-NAL ABSTRACTION.   That is, in the reality of our our sensory experience, there can’t be GROWTH of the TOWN without SHRINKAGE of the Wilderness.

But LANGUAGE and GRAMMAR are tools that let us manufacture whatever representations we want regardless of sensory-experience grounded reality, and there is a whole class of representations called RATIONAL REPRESENTATIONS such as ‘THE TOWN IS GROWING’ that compare the dimensions of the TOWN at an earlier TIME with the dimensions of the TOWN at a later TIME (note the imposing of the space and time frame and the concept of ‘dimensions’ which imputes LOCAL thing-in-itself status).

This referencing of the TOWN to an ABSOLUTE REFERENCE FRAME serves up the abstraction of GROWTH which is a LOCAL substitute or ‘surrogate’ for the REAL NONLOCAL dynamic of TRANSFORMATION.

NOTA BENE:  The concept of GROWTH of the TOWN depends on the imposing of an abstract notional ABSOLUTE REFERENCE FRAME to escape the REALITY of THE TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE in which TOWNING is INCLUDED in the same sense as the TRANSFORMING APPLE that manifests by WHAT WE SPEAK OF as a GROWING BROWN SPOT “ON THE APPLE” without ever mentioning the CONJUGATE SHRINKING of the UNROTTED portion of the apple.

The ONE-SIDED (monopolar) INCREASING RATIO (of rotting portion)  is the RATIO-NAL view from whence the concept of G.R.O.W.T.H. derives and we employ it in language and thus in our psychological sense of what is going on, as a SUBSTITUTE for what is ACTUALLY GOING ON which is the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE.

As one can understand, this reduction of TRANSFORMATION to GROWTH enables RE-CONCEPTUALIZING what is actually going on (TRANSFORMATION which is NONLOCAL) in terms of GROWTH which is LOCAL.

From the point of view of having to construct a finite language-and-grammar REPRESENTATION, we can see that by introducing the abstract DOUBLE ERROR based concept of GROWTH, where the DOUBLE ERROR consists of the FIRST ERROR of NAMING (we impose the NAME “TOWN”) to impute LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF EXISTENCE, and conflate this with the SECOND ERROR of GRAMMAR where we use the verb GROW to compound our FIRST ERROR of imputing LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF-EXISTENCE by grammatically endowing the LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF with ITS OWN POWERS OF SOURCING ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT, … hence ‘The TOWN is GROWING larger and more productive’.

This ABSTRACTION based sense of LOCAL SOURCING of actions and development by way of the DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR gives us a means of REPRESENTATION that allows us to ‘BREAK IN TO’ the NONLOCAL transforming relational continuum so as to establish a LOCAL BEACHHEAD or STAKE-IN-THE-GROUND which we RATIO UP as in ‘The SPOT “ON THE APPLE” is GROWING LARGER and BROWNER.  This is a SELF-REFERENCING technique as is the basis of RATIO-NAL ABSTRACTION, which in itself implies inclusion IN ABSOLUTE SPACE (“space” as an empty container that answers the question; ‘How can we have a LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF which GROWS without having to address the whole reality of TRANSFORMATION?).  The answer is for us to employ RATIO or RATIONALITY so that when we say ‘the TOWN is GROWING’ we can understand GROWTH as a referring back from the current state of a LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF to a former state of THE SAME LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF.

This TRICK of RATIO-NALITY aka REASON delivers up the abstract concept of GROWTH which brings with it, the abstract concept of ABSOLUTE SPACE REFERENCE FRAMING so that the MOULDING IS NO LONGER UNDERSTOOD as the manifesting of TRANSFORMATION of the APPLE but instead, the MOLD SPOT, like the TOWN, is regarded as a LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF with its own GRAMMAR-GIVEN powers of SOURCING ACTIONS (GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT).

This DOUBLE ERROR equips us to talk about the TOWN on the Landscape and/or the MOLD on the apple, as a THING-IN-ITSELF with its own GRAMMAR-GIVEN powers of sourcing GROWTH and DEVELOPMENT (rather than acknowledging that it is relational feature within the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE).

THAT WHICH IS, IN REALITY, NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION, BECOMES, THANKS TO THE DOUBLE ERROR REDUCTION, A LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF (TOWN, MOULD), NOTIONALLY WITH ITS OWN POWERS OF SOURCING ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT (GROWTH, SPREADING ETC.).

THESE ABSTRACT CONCEPTUALIZATIONS OF “LOCAL BEING” (THIS IS ERROR #1) AND “LOCAL SOURCING OF GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT” (THIS IS ERROR #2) ARE THE COMPONENTS OF “REASON” AKA “RATIONAL THIINKING”.  With REASON aka RATIONAL THINKING available to us thanks to the DOUBLE ERROR abstracting power of NAMING and GRAMMAR, we are able to CONSTRUCT “LOCAL” REPRESENTATIONS OF REALITY.  These “LOCAL” REPRESENTATIONS include; ‘The TOWN is GROWING LARGER and MORE PRODUCTIVE’ is a DOUBLE ERROR based REPRESENTATION in terms of LOCAL THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES with notional LOCAL POWERS OF SOURCING ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS serving as a SUBSTITUTE for the reality of NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION.

QUESTION:But how could such RATIO based REDUCTION as “The LOCAL TOWN is GROWING” substitute for ‘The NONLOCAL “LANDSCAPE that is TRANSFORMING”? 

ANSWER: We can do what we want with language as we are the designers of this form of RE-PRESENTATION and the fact it that “it is impossible to capture in words THE TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE since everything is in continual flux”, so why not substitute something EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT (the TOWN is GROWING) for the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT (the Landscape is TRANSFORMING)?

RATIONALITY aka REASON is the abstraction that we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS are in the habit of SUBSTITUTING for REALITY that is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT; i.e. the TRANSFORMING relational continuum aka the Wave-field aka ‘the Tao’.

In the case of modern physics, indigenous aboriginal cultures,Taoism/Buddhism and Advaita Vedanta, we employ the DOUBLE ERROR based abstractions of RATIONALITY aka REASON only as THROW-AWAY INFERENCES of the TRANSFORMATION that is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT.  As Wittgenstein reminds us, we can use REASON as deployed by logical propositions, in constructions that simply INFER the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICITY reality of TRANSFORMATION;

6.54 My propositions are elucidatory in this way: he who understands me finally recognizes them as senseless, when he has climbed out through them, on them, over them. (He must so to speak throw away the ladder, after he has climbed up on it.)

He must surmount these propositions; then he sees the world rightly.

IN other words, the logical propositions of REASON aka RATIONAL INTELLECTION are NOT to be ‘understood LITERALLY’ but rather ‘REASON’ is only good for INFERRING the reality of TRANSFORMATION  that is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT.

Nietzsche’s point is well-made; i.e. there is no such thing as LOCAL SORCERY aka LOCAL SOURCING of actions and developments.  The DOUBLE ERROR construction ‘The TOWN is GROWING’ implies LOCAL SOURCING as in the notion of the spot of mold on the apple GROWING LARGER when what is REALLY going on is TRANSFORMATION of the apple which is INEFFABLE (we would have to capture the whole universe as ‘the transforming relational continuum’) so why not use language and grammar to ISOLATE and LOCALIZE the ‘spot’ and develop language and grammar that allows our REPRESENTATION to be LOCAL as exemplified by ‘the MOULD SPOT IS GROWING, or ‘the TOWN is GROWING’.

These are exemplary of RATIO-based language which allows us to THINK in terms that are EFFABLE-because LOCAL and EXPLICIT which avoid having to deal with TRANSFORMATION which is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT.

But we make a mistake if we start regarding our RATIONAL reductions such as ‘the TOWN is GROWING’ as REALITY because such reductions only qualify for INFERENCE of the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT reality of TRANSFORMATION which lies beyond the reach of explicit language.

So, we are forced to REDUCE OUR REPRESENTATIONS OF REALITY in order to ‘fit them into language and grammar’ since ‘language and grammar’ have limited capacities for representation and cannot DIRECTLY accommodate representations of forms that are in continual flux.  Reductive compromise is needed in order to bring to bear the limited-capability representations of language.  Thus we teach our children the DOUBLE ERROR form of language which breaks down the relational dynamic of NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION to a reduced form of representation in the DOUBLE ERROR terms of LOCAL things-in-themselves with GRAMMAR-given powers of LOCALLY SOURCING their own actions and developments, hence the NONLOCAL TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE gets spoken of in the LOCAL terms of the GROWTH of the TOWN.   Kepler pointed out how we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS are in the habit of constructing representations that simplify ‘REALITY’ (constructing a kind of learner-level reality), using them as a SUBSTITUTE REALITY and then FORGETTING that they are NOT REALITY but only reductions of REALITY.

“As regards the academies, they are established in order to regulate the studies of the pupils and are concerned not to have the program of teaching change very often: in such places, because it is a question of the progress of the students, it frequently happens that the things which have to be chosen are not those which are most true but those which are most easy. And by that division in things which makes different people form different judgements, it so happens that certain people are in error contrary to their own opinion.” – Johannes Kepler, ‘Harmonies of the World’

The simplifying of TOWNING (as in NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION) to what we speak of as a “LOCAL TOWN that GROWS larger and more productive” is a reductive simplification that lets us avoid the REALITY of NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION which is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT.

Kepler’s warning is well-placed because falling into that pitfall is exactly what is going on with us WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS in regard to our use of RATIONAL REDUCTION of the NONLOCAL to the LOCAL; e.g. from “the NONLOCAL TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE to the LOCAL TOWN THAT IS GROWING.”

The use of RATIONAL INTELLECTION for the purpose of substituting LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT CONSTRUCTIONS for NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT TRANSFORMATION ‘makes sense’ as a RATIONALIZING DEVICE, but NOT as an out-and-out REALITY REPLACEMENT as we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS are tending to employ it.

If we all start thinking in terms of GROWTH and using it in our intellectual REPRESENTATION of REALITY, then we blind ourselves to the REAL REALITY of TRANSFORMATION and thus to the SHRINKING of Wilderness that is conjugate to the GROWTH of cultivated/industrialized land.  Thinking in terms of ‘The TOWN is GROWING’ is an example of how we can lose our grasp of the REAL REALITY of the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE.  In other words, there is only ONE REALITY here and it is that of the TRANSFORMING LANDSCAPE.  The RATIONAL or REASON based abstraction of ‘the TOWN IS GROWING’ is ABSTRACTION and it is not a REALITY that can be affirmed by our sensory experience (we can only affirm it with our RATIO-NAL abstracting as with the DOUBLE ERROR).

The BOTTOM LINE point being made here is that we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have become ‘addicted’ to employing REASON based reality representations NOT JUST AS TOOLS OF INFERENCE, BUT AS SUBSTITUTES for the REAL REALITY of our sensory experience of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum, a REAL REALITY that lies beyond the reductive abstractions of REASON.  The danger of confusing REASON (aka RATIO-NALITY) for REALITY is the point being made by Nietzsche;

SYNOPSIS:  We WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS are confusing our REASON based LOCAL pseudo-REALITY constructions for the NONLOCAL REALITY of our SENSORY EXPEIRENCE, a CONFUSION which is leading to INCOHERENCE and DYSFUNCTION in our SOCIAL-RELATIONAL DYNAMIC.  The Conservative-Liberal polar split is just one example where REASON is sowing confusion and conflict because REASON aka RATIONAL INTELLECTION is simplification  (it is a reduction to LOCAL SOURCING) that falls far short of capturing the REAL REALITY of our inclusion in the NONLOCAL transforming relational continuum aka the Wave-field.  MORE THAN THIS, REASON introduces a mirror image type ambiguity of the type; ‘does the Hurricane source the stirring up of the Atmosphere?’ … ‘or does the Atmosphere source the stirring up of the Hurricane?.  This is the same ambiguity that gives rise to the Conservative – Liberal political split wherein the former (Conservative) belief is that the INDIVIDUAL is where the LOCAL SOURCING of social actions and developments come from whereas the latter (Liberal) belief is that the SOCIAL COLLECTIVE is where the LOCAL SOURCING of social actions and developments come from.  IN REALITY, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS LOCAL SOURCING, there is only TRANSFORMATION.

At the present we are STUCK in the grips of the popular deployment of REASON, while our INTUITION that is capable of understanding NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION is waiting in the wings for a restoring to natural precedence over REASON.   REASON is what we get by using the DOUBLE ERROR abstractions of NAMING-instantiated LOCAL THING-IN-ITSELF BEING conflated by GRAMMAR-instantiated powers of SOURCING actions and development to tell ourselves that the TOWN is GROWING LARGER and more productive, while INTUITION is reminding us of the REAL REALITY of our inclusion in the TRANSFORMING relational continuum.

Just because the former is EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT while the latter is INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT is no justification for elevating the former to our OPERATIVE REALITY and sidelining the latter.

However, this is where we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS have currently positioned ourselves and it is the source of rising dysfunction wherein we are convincing ourselves that we are constructing a wonderful new and improved world featuring modern LOCAL TOWNS AND CITIES with modern transportation infrastructure and a social dynamic wherein we HUMANS are able to TRAVEL ALL OVER THE WORLD, like ants on a watermelon as if the FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO abstract LOCAL and EXPLICIT CONSTRUCTION based representation were REAL, and thus substituting it for the more cumbersome (intellectually and linguistically, but not intuitively) FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE reality of NONLOCAL TRANSFORMATION.

The DOUBLE ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR supports the abstract splitting into FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO, the INHABITANT and the HABITAT

While our sensory experience supports the continuing cycle of EMERGENCE and SUBMERGENCE of relational forms as in the FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE understanding, the EGO demands full and sole credit for one’s own INDEPENDENT BEING based LOCAL POWERS of SOURCING actions and developments.

Thus, regrounding ourselves in the REAL REALITY of FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-ONE would require us to discard our Emperor’s New Clothes’ that associated with our ‘taking credit for SOURCING’ our own actions and developments, a pseudo-reality that radically conflicts with the understanding of self in terms of ‘mitakuye oyasin’, the understanding that ‘everything is related’ as within a transforming relational continuum.

The social conflict, division and dysfunction continues to mount in WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENT social dynamics due to EGO affirmed belief in FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO (not just as a tool of inference but as an imagined pseudo-reality) which secures the abstract notion of LOCAL SOURCING of ACTIONS and DEVELOPMENTS.
