WESTERN CULTURE’s OBSESSION with VISUAL OBJECTIFICATION
Author’s PREFACE:
This title; WESTERN CULTURE’s OBSESSION with VISUAL OBJECTIFICATION is intended as a pivot for getting to the core discussion on how relational TRANSFORMATION is obscured by the reduction to abstraction inherent in WESTERN language and grammar constructions. TRANSFORMATION is the greater reality and it is BEYOND VISUAL CAPTURE as it is NONLOCAL
The attempt to capture ‘reality’ in one’s mind, NOT BY INTUITION which is innately relational, but by way of intellectual constructions that can be perceived in the mind VISUALLY, must necessarily fall short, for the same reason that, as Goedel’s theorem shows, all finite systems of logic are innately incomplete. The EITHER/OR logic of the EXCLUDED medium which shows FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO is able to LIMIT by LOCALIZING a portion of the NONLOCAL transforming relational continuum. When applied, for example, to the relational resonances that manifest as DUNING, when we impose NAMING such as ‘the DUNE’ which reduces our VISUAL FOCUS to the NAMING-constrained visual form, giving us the sense of something LOCAL and EXPLICIT (“existing-in-its-own-right”) although if we were ever put to the test, we should have difficulty in being EXPLICIT as to the binary boundary between NOT-DUNE and DUNE.
NOTE that THERE IS NO PHYSICAL BREAK-OUT of ‘the DUNE’ from the TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM, BUT ONLY A NAMING-inspired MENTAL-VISUAL BREAK-OUT, and thus no REALITY grounding for the DOUBLE ERROR inferred BEING and SOURCING powers with which we dress up ‘the DUNE’ (the ‘DUNE’ existing only as a visual picture in our mind). That is, we use the DOUBLE ERROR to impute LOCAL BEING and the power of SOURCING actions and development; e.g. “the DUNE is growing higher and longer and is shifting towards the coast”.
While ‘humaning’ instad of ‘human’ delivers the same ‘exposé’ as ‘DUNING’ instead of ‘dune’, it may be more challenging for us WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS to ‘swallow’ because of our lifetime of EGO-conditioning (DOUBLE ERROR conditioning) where we use NAMING for the imputing of LOCAL BEING to OURSELVES.
VISUAL OBJECTIFICATION in concert with NAMING allows us to REDUCE, ‘EFFABLE-ize, ‘LOCAL-ize’ and ‘EXPLICIT-ize’ the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT, as characterizes the transforming relational continuum aka the Wave-field aka the Tao. But this reduction of the INEFFABLE to EFFABLE is only a CRUDE reduction which is nevertheless of immense information sharing value, … GET THE “PICTURE”? Sharing that GIVES US “THE PICTURE” is no substitute for sensory experience because sensory experience is of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum. No matter how much detailed knowledge is possessed by the virgin with the Ph.D. in sexual relations, VISUAL instruction is incapable of reproducing the conjugate scatter-gather experience.
Gathering-Scattering in a spherical sense comes in the form of the complex conjugate relation as in the Wave-dynamic where GATHERING with respect to one antipode is SCATTERING with respect to the conjugate antipode. The ambiguity derives from our imposing of this model. What is going on is TRANSFORMATION any way you look at it, and it is OUR SIMPLIFYING REDUCTION of TRANSFORMATION to the bipolar SCATTERING-GATHERING that introduces the ambiguity, and at the same time reduces the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT to the EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT. As students learning how to master such complexity, our tendency is to leave our ‘deeper’ schooling behind once we have mastered the superficial EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT.

As it turns out, it is our WESTERN CULTURE ADHERING social collective as a whole, that has opted for the ‘low road’ of KISS (keep it stimple, stupid) which has us make the DOUBLE ERROR based simplifying reduction (of NAMING and GRAMMAR), … BUT INSTEAD OF EMPLOYING IT AS A ‘WITTGENSTEIN LADDER’ TO BOOTSTRAP AN INTUITIVE LEAP TO THE INEFFABLE-BECAUSE-NONLOCAL-AND-IMPLICIT, … WE WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS ARE FORE-GOING THE ‘INTUITIVE LEAP’ AND EMPLOYING THE LOCAL-EFFABLE-AND-EXPLICIT AS THE ‘OPERATIVE REALITY’. So when we say John Wilkes Booth killed Abraham Lincoln, we mean it in the same “DOUBLE ERROR’ sense as “LIGHTNING FLASHES’ AND ‘FIRE-BURNS’.
SO, FOR US WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS, IT’S “GOODBYE TO REALITY AS THE INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT, and ‘HELLO TO REALITY AS THE EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT’ which means the end of understanding our own participative contribution within relational dynamics that can be harmony or dissonance cultivating, and the beginning of labelling DOUBLE ERROR agents as EITHER BENOGENS (responsibles for the genesis of beneficial actions and developments) OR PATHOGENS (responsibles for the genesis of destructive/pathological actions and developments).
Of course this DOUBLE ERROR, binary logic dysfunction is a CRAZY-MAKER that will never work in the primary reality constructing role we are giving to it, but even though binary logic is screwing up our reality constructions, we continue to use binary logic to try to dig ourselves out of the hole that binary logic is digging us into. As Bohm discerned, we need a new and more capable logic, and we have a new logic; i.e. the modern physics non-binary BOTH/AND logic of the INCLUDED medium wherein FIGURE-and-GROUND-are-ONE and which supports discursive rhetoric dealing with reality that is NONLOCAL, INEFFABLE and IMPLICIT.
NOTA BENE: WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENT conservatives and liberals BOTH have their ladders up the wrong wall with their assumption that the LOCAL, EFFABLE, EXPLICIT is capable of capturing the primary reality, setting us all up (we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS) for an insane and inexorable tilting-at-windmill pathogens while putting us in denial of our inclusion in relational flow (in denial of mitakuye oyasin)
Our characterizing of COVID 19 as a pathogen (rather than relational dissonance) is a current manifestation of our rejection of the natural primacy of the NONLOCAL, INEFFABLE, IMPLICIT and our natural need for cultivating relational harmony therein.

As Heraclitus observed and modern physics reaffirmed, SCATTERING-GATHERING is ONE dynamic, there is no such thing as EITHER scattering OR gathering, as we can see, … or rather, as we can intuit, since our vision is limited to FLAT-SPACE perspective, although our intuition has no such limitation.
If we imagined space to be a flat plane of infinite extent rather than a spherical surface, we could then see SCATTERING and GATHERING as TWO distinct and separate dynamics. However, in the space of the real world of our actual sensory experience on the surface of a spherical earth, SCATTERING and GATHERING are ONE DYNAMIC which we know as TRANSFORMATION.
Of course, this is a ‘relational understanding’ wherein relations are in an innate and natural primacy over the abstraction of LOCAL thing-in-itself BEING which we know (as Nietzsche has pointed out) derives from the DOUBL ERROR of NAMING and GRAMMAR as for example, ‘KATRINA is GROWING LARGER AND STRONGER and is DEVASTATING the city of New Orleans. In contemplating this DOUBLE ERROR construction, we lose touch with the larger reality of relational TRANSFORMATION.
THE DOUBLE ERROR: The FIRST ERROR of NAMING establishes abstract LOCAL thing-in-itself existence and we conflate this with the SECOND ERROR of GRAMMAR in imputing to the NAMING-instantiated thing-in-itself the notional power of SOURCING actions and development.
So far, this is all VISUAL, … and all this VISUALIZATION based talk is distracting us from the basic reality of relational TRANSFORMATION.
WHY DO WE ALLOW OURSELVES TO BE DISTRACTED ‘from the reality of our sensory experience of inclusion in TRANSFORMATION’? Why do we JUMP SHIP from the IMPLICIT-because-relational (or in other words, NONLOCAL), to the EXPLICIT-because-LOCAL?
WHAT YOU MEAN ‘WE’, WHITE MAN?
Indigenous aboriginal culture adherents DO NOT JUMP SHIP from the IMPLICIT-because-NONLOCAL (relational) to the EXPLICIT-because-LOCAL (absolute) but use the EXPLICIT as a ‘Wittgenstein ladder’ to stimulate our intuitive understanding of the IMPLICIT-because-NONLOCAL.
In other words, the EXPLICIT is a REDUCTION of the INEFABLE-because-NONLOCAL reality of our sensory experience and it is a REDUCTION that is EFFABLE and thus shareable by means of language and grammar, and this language-and-grammar ‘shareability’ is a distinguishing characteristic of the forms in the flow known as ‘humanings’ which NAMING and GRAMMAR allow us to recast as EFFABLEs termed HUMANS equipped by GRAMMAR with ‘their own’ notional LOCAL powers of SOURCING actions and developments.
EAST and WEST separate in that while EAST uses this reduction of the INEFFABLE—because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT to the EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT as a stimulus for an intuitive leap to the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT understood as the basic sensory experience reality, … the WEST employs the REDUCTION to the EFFABLE-because-LOCAL -and-EXPLICIT, — CRAZILY, … as the OPERATIVEE REALITY.
THUS, when we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS say; ‘Hurricane Katrina is growing larger and stronger and is ravaging New Orleans’, our understanding is (COMMONLY) NOT like that of the indigenous aboriginal who is prompted by such experience to think in terms of ‘mitakuye oyasin’, all things are related, where we are all included in the GREAT HARMONY, the GREAT “TRANSFORMING RELATIONAL CONTINUUM”.
THIS SENSE OF INCLUSION IN TRANSFORMATION does not mean that we cannot, also, make use of the visual perspective of that which ‘out there in front of us’, but FOR SURE, if we are in the VOYEUR VISUALIZING MODE which separates SUBJECT and OBJECT and has us using our intellectual abstracting powers to construct a conceptualizing of ‘what is going on out there’, … we cannot, in the same moment, be intuiting our inclusion in the transforming relational continuum.
This is a problem for us WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS in that we tend to ‘get stuck’ in the SUBJECT-and-OBJECT splitting pseudo-world of VISUALIZATION wherein FIGURE and GROUND are TWO.

If you find this confusing, it is not hard to understand why because our language (the language that we WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENTS employ) makes basic use of SUBJECT-OBJECT SPLITTING. That is what the DOUBLE ERROR is ‘all about, as in the example ‘Katrina is growing larger and stronger and is ravaging New Orleans’… NO, NO, NO!!! REALITY IS RELATIONAL TRANSFORMATION and we it is NOT ‘out there in front of us, WE ARE INCLUDED IN TRANSFORMATION. EVERYTHING is included in TRANSFORMATION aka the Wave-field, the Tao, the transforming relational continuum.
IT IS LANGUAGE AND GRAMMAR AND THE ‘DOUBLE ERROR’ IT SUPPORTS, THAT REDUCES RELATIONAL TRANSFORMATION TO THE ABSTRACT TERMS OF NAMING-INSTANTIATED THINGS-IN-THEMSELVES-NOTIONALLY WITH THEIR OWN POWERS OF SOURCING ACTIONS AND DEVELOPMENTS, … eg. plug in whatever you want to pin a NAME on, your ‘self’, your ‘nation’, your ‘corporation’, an ‘animal’, a ‘vegetable’, a ‘mineral’ … then conjoin it with some GRAMMAR and then we can REPLACE NONLOCAL/IMPLICIT/INEFFABLE TRANSFORMATION with LOCAL/EXPLICIT/EFFABLE constructions of reality.
TWO UNDERSTANDINGS OF REALITY:
INSTEAD OF UNDERSTANDING REALITY AS RELATIONAL TRANSFORMATION that is NONLOCAL and IMPLICIT, we can use the DOUBLE ERROR to fabricate intellectual-visual portrayals that are LOCAL and EXPLICIT such as ‘Katina is growing larger and stronger and is ravaging New Orleans’ which serve us up a VISUAL PSEUDO-REALITY that is NOT REAL in terms of sensory experience, but is INTELLECTUAL CONSTRUCTION that is now SHAREABLE.
So what are we TO THINK when the AMBIANCE we are relationally included in comes to the boil (becomes turbulent) and, as our language might capture it, the tornado is ‘coming toward us’?
-1- RELATIONAL TRANSFORMATION is underway and I am aware of my inclusion within it and that my relative movements contribute to the shaping of this TRANSFORMATION that I am included in.
-2- THERE IS A DANGEROUSLY POWERFUL LOCAL THING over there that is heading towards this less-powerful LOCAL THING over here called ‘myself’, that simple logic programmed with the goal to ‘preserve my LOCAL BEING’ suggests that I move my ass out of ITS path.
THE VISUAL PICTURING IS THE SAME IN BOTH CASES and it is only in the UNDERSTANDING that there is a radical difference. In the first interpretation (-1-), FIGURE AND GROUND ARE ONE, and in the second interpretation (-2-), FIGURE and GROUND ARE TWO.
NOTE THAT THE UNDERSTANDING THAT FIGURE AND GROUND ARE ONE … IS NOT LOGICAL in the usual sense where we use the EITHER/OR logic of the EXCLUDED medium where visually conceive of the SUBJECT (ourselves) and OBJECT (the tornado) as TWO separate things-in-themselves.
BUT ‘QUANTUM LOGIC’ aka the BOTH/AND logic of the INCLUDED medium SUPPORTS the interpretation (-1-) of RELATIONAL TRANSFORMATION.
This example of the availability of two types of logic brings us back to the SCATTERING-GATHERING dynamic and how we may understand such phenomena; i.e. for forms such as ourselves on the surface of the sphere of the earth, our scattering is gathering which is why we need another identifier that doesn’t split things into two separate dynamics and that identifier is TRANSFORMATION. If a mighty volcano erupts, people will scatter away from the eruption, and if this were to occur on a flat surface of infinite extent (a geometrical abstraction) we could speak of ‘scattering’ as a real dynamic and ‘gathering’ as a real dynamic but in the real world of our sensory experience as inhabiting the space on the surface of a sphere,, our ‘scattering’ is at the same time, ‘gathering’ which is to say that; WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON IS (RELATIONAL) TRANSFORMATION.
YOU MAY SAY that what I am playing with here is intellectual sophistry and mind-games.
I WILL SAY that what I am talking about is the EAST-WEST reality SPLIT and how the WEST reality is a CRAZY-MAKER.
My understanding is that the DOUBLE ERROR based split of FIGURE-and-GROUND-as-TWO, which is a tool to reduce the INEFFABLE-because-NONLOCAL-and-IMPLICIT to the EFFABLE-because-LOCAL-and-EXPLICIT, … IS, IN WESTERN CULTURE, RUNNING AWAY WITH THE WORKMAN. That is, while our DOUBLE ERROR constructs are fashioned from it, there is no SUBJECT-OBJECT SPLIT in the reality of our sensory experience of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum.

FIGURE AND GROUND ARE ONLY ONE. As in the BOTH/AND logic of the INCLUDED medium, the hurricane and the atmosphere ARE ONE; the hurricane DOES NOT MOVE THROUGH THE ATMOSPHERE, the hurricane is the APPEARANCE of the TRANSFORMING ATMOSPHERE.
The INHABITANT and the HABITAT (e.g. the HUMAN and the ENVIRONMENT) ARE ONLY ONE The barrier between them cannot be said to have broken down as a result of recent experience in the physical sciences, for this barrier does not exist.”
This BARRIER is the DOUBLE ERROR of language and grammar pointed out by Nietzsche;
“Our judgement has us conclude that every change must have an author”;–but this conclusion is already mythology: it separates that which effects from the effecting. If I say “lightning flashes,” I have posited the flash once as an activity and a second time as a subject, and thus added to the event a being that is not one with the event but is rather fixed, “is” and does not “become.”–To regard an event as an “effecting,” and this as being, that is the double error, or interpretation, of which we are guilty.” – Nietzsche, ‘Will to Power’, 531
Why did we ‘do that’? Why did we inject the ‘double error’ into our language?
Because the reality of our sensory experience is NONLOCAL, IMPLICIT and thus INEFFABLE; e.g. the hurricane is a relational feature within the transforming relational continuum. TRANSFORMATION is NONLOCAL, IMPLICIT and INEFFABLE.
What does that ‘do for us’?
Of that which we cannot speak, we must remain silent’ – (“Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muss man schweigen”) –Wittgenstein’s final statement (7.0) in Tractatus Logico Philosphicus).
That is, we can’t speak of the all-including Wave-field, the transforming relational continuum we are included in, because our WESTERN language is based on visualization which requires the SUBJECT-OBJECT SPLIT or the INHABITANT-HABITAT split which is ABSTRACTION.
So, let’s be clear; if we are talking about something in LOCAL, EFFABLE, EXPLICIT terms, we are NOT talking about the reality of our sensory experience of inclusion in the transforming relational continuum.
The point is that reality is not reducible to explicit language based visual representation because reality (the all-including transforming relational continuum) cannot be reduced to EXPLICIT, LOCAL, VISUALIZABLE CONSTRUCTS.

In other words, we cannot reduce the all-including ‘fluid Wave-field reality’ (which includes ourselves) to something ‘out there’ such as LOCAL, VISUAL, EXPLICIT entities, … without reducing ourselves to notional LOCAL, VISUAL, EXPLICIT entities, which is a real CRAZY-MAKER wherein we FORGET that we are INCLUDED in the transforming relational continuum.

So that they will respect the land, tell your children that the earth is rich with the lives of our kin. Teach your children what we have taught our children, that the earth is our mother. SCATTERING-GATHERING as ONE dynamic is the dynamic of relational TRANSFORMATION that is ALL-INCLUDING and thus lies beyond the reach of VISUAL IMAGING.
Heraclitus makes the vital point that SCATTERING and GATHERING are SIMULTANEOUS and NOT SEQUENTIAL as is natural in the case of scattering and gathering on the surface of a sphere. On the other hand, SCATTERING and GATHERING as one-after-the-other sequential MOVEMENTS would require a flat space of infinite extent which would in turn demand the inventing of the concept of TIME so that we might portray SEQUENCES of MOVEMENTS. This could be drawn up as a time-sequence of visual pictures or ‘snapshots’ and thus give us a ‘show-and-tell’ basis for capturing, reducing and extracting a visualizable piece of the transforming relational continuum, like the vertical snake-like coils of the tornado that attracts our attention like the belly-dancer in the smoke rising from the Aladdin’s magic lamp of our ima genie-ing.
Mesmerized by such VISUAL imagery, and perhaps thinking in terms of POSSESSING the visual form, rather than dancing the dance together with it as in the mitakuye oyasin understanding of inclusion in the GREAT HARMONY, we may get trapped in that SUBJECT-OBJECT SPLITTING ABSTRACT MINDGAME, and reduce ourselves to the kid-in-the-candy-store mode of operation that characterizes WESTERN CULTURE ADHERENCY.
