Friedrich Nietzsche strongly critiqued the Eleatics (such as Parmenides) in his early work Philosophy in the Tragic Age of the Greeks and related writings. 

Key Aspects of Nietzsche’s Critique

• • Rejection of Static Being: The Eleatics (led by Parmenides)  claimed that true “Being” is one, immutable, and eternal, while motion, change, and multiplicity are illusions. Nietzsche firmly opposed this, arguing that reality is dynamic, chaotic, and characterized by constant becoming. 

• • The “Mobile Thought” Objection: Nietzsche countered the Eleatic identification of reason with static Being by arguing that rational thought itself is made of concepts, and concepts are inherently mobile and in motion. If thought moves, then motion and multiplicity cannot be dismissed as unreal. 

• • Alliance with Heraclitus: While the Eleatics rejected the testimony of the senses because they showed change and plurality, Nietzsche championed Heraclitus, who embraced the ever-flowing stream of becoming. Nietzsche argued that the senses do not lie—rather, “reason” and language lie by inventing the false concepts of permanent “substance,” “unity,” and “thinghood”. 

• • Life-Denying Pathology: Nietzsche viewed the Eleatic sage—the man of total immutability and cold, impersonal logic—as a symptom of a life-denying impulse, an attempt to escape the suffering and flux of the real world into an abstract, petrified realm of concepts.
